setting large gun safe into wall

Recommended Posts

So, I just picked up a new LARGE gun safe and need to find a spot to put it.  I have a laundry room in the basement, but my wife is already talking about adding cabinets next to washer/dryer, wtf!  She doesnt want it directly in the family room since she thinks it a big eye sore.

I was thinking about putting the safe in the wall going into the laundry room from the family room.  Since its only about 25" deep, it will just make it if I bump out the wall about 6 inches and angle it near the corner.   I want to frame out & sheetrock around it and add shelving above it.  Has anyone buried their safe in a wall and just let the front side show??  If so, any pics?  I can barely see anything online like i wanted.

kinda like this:

consider how easy or hard it would be to knock out the surrounding walls to wrap a strap or chain around it and yank the thing out. if I were to do a built-in of some kind I'd strongly consider a cinder blocked and rebar'ed wall configuration on 3 sides, with possibly something on top as well. you can leave a couple inches to trim it out but the harder it is to get something around it the harder it is to move it or break into it. Also if you're going to all that trouble I'd work out a way to "hide" it completely. that "frenched" in look is cool and all, but it screams "SHIT WORTH STEALING IS HERE!" personally I'd have set it farther back and tried to make it disappear.

Unfort, I dont have all the extra room avail to bury it otherwise I would. The spokes stick out too far already.

= not an option, no room behind it since it backs up to furnace and cinder block foundation wall on one side. If I frame it out, I highly doubt they will be able to have good access to the 3 sides or top.   It will still be bolted to the concrete floor (basement).

also, will have a separate camera recording the safe & motion sensor.

Read this, and be sure to see the "Gun Safe Ideal Closet Location" diagram fairly far down the page. Notice the relation between the hinge side and opposing sidewall to limit pry bar access. (Assuming the safe is bolted down.)

Avoid the laundry - humidity is high in that area.

Those guns will turn to rust FAST.

Agreed, having a big ass safe in view screams "TAKE ME!!!"

OP should bolt the safe to the wall and floor even if completely hidden. Someone yanking the safe out is defiantly possible especially if they (going to take two or three people to steal it) feel something of serious value is inside.

Can you take a picture of the area you want to put it. I have an idea for you. If there is enough room in the family room maybe built it into the wall but build across the whole wall and make it built in shelves with doors covering the safe.
