becoming a certified pistol instructor?

Recommended Posts

I am a LEO and shoot Expert Class in my PD I would like to add NRA Instructor to my resume to up my chances of becoming an instructor for my PD. What are the requirements to complete a instructor course? Will I need all the basic pistol and safety courses first even if I had all that in the academy?

Thanks

If you're interested in the civilian certifications you need to take the basic courses before you take the instructors course. The only course you can take which gives you credit for your academy training is the NRA Police Firearms Instructors course which is only open to LEOs IIRC. Check the NRA website for more info.

There are firearms instructors courses given at different police academies which are recognized by the NJ Police Training Commission. The easiest way to attend these is to have your department send you. I went to one about 15 years ago at Union County's Stamler Academy. I was working for a federal agency, requested to attend, and my agency paid for it.

Actually you don't need to take either the NRA Basic Pistol course or the NRA First Steps pistol courses to be an NRA Pistol instructor.  Its strongly recommended so you know how the course is supposed to work, but not technically a requirement.  You should just be able to go to any NRA Master Instructor and they will be able to run the course for you for a fee.  Its a two step process.  You need to take the NRA BIT course first and then take the NRA Pistol Instruction course.  The BIT is a basics of instruction course that walks you through how you're supposed to teach ANY NRA course, then you can go to the Pistol instruction course where you learn how to (and actually do) teach that course.  I would reach out to Dawn at Shoot NJ, that's where I got my Pistol Inst. Cert from.

I can't speak as to how useful it would be towards your end goal though.
