Is this a deal?

Recommended Posts

I would not pay that much for an old Italian trade, especially without seeing it first hand.  I own a 92FS and love it.  They are very expensive guns NIB and are easy to find.

My advice is to pass on it and look for a new one you can break in yourself :)

RobertJames, have you shot Berettas (92FS or similar) at all?

You know, the reason I'm asking is that from what I've seen so far (and I have to admit I haven't seen a lot in terms of firearms) those Berettas (I mean, 92FS and similar) are one of the examples of love or hate relationship. Personally, I shot 92FS twice (both time rentals) and I clearly put a note in my mind to NEVER buy it for whatever price.

Nonetheless I've seen at least several guys even shooting USPSA with those Berettas (and even quire successfully), so they are not that bad, they are just not for me.

It's by no means to deter you from the deal itself, just to make sure you really tried it before and made a conscious decision :-)

Thanks for the input, everyone, I'll be waiting for something nicer to come along.  And Mikka, yes I have shot them before.  It's the only double stack pistol that feels good in my hand so far.  I also like how the slide feels like it's on bearings, so smooth.

The one pictured looks like it has plenty of "patina" lol. I'm also wondering about the Euro-style mag release.

I had one. They are ok if you can get used of the mag release. The 92S.... Circa mid 70's I think. It is the second 92 developed. First the 92... Then the Italian police wanted a safety and hence, the 'S' was born. After that, they moved them to a conventional location. You can always get it cerakoted.

If you narrow down what your looking for (price, caliber, action, etc) in a handgun we could maybe recommend something for you

Beretta 92 or M9

S&W Model 27, 28, 60, or 686

something small and concealable.  I like the look of the Taurus 709 slim but they have had QC issues in the past.

CZ SP-01

Browning High Power

And of course, another 1911.  No such thing as too many

I'm not a fan of plastic guns, although I might make an exception for a Ruger LCP or LC9.  I think I'll have to rent one.

Can't say for other models, but SP-01s are rather difficult to get now, probably due to CZ manufacturing calendar (they are out of stock almost everywhere).

If you are seriously considering SP-01, watch Damascus Gun Shop or just write Michael from there (michael(AT)damascusgunshop.com) and ask him to be added to a waitlist for SP-01. They appear here and there from time to time (you should also watch Grabagun and KYGunCo; don't bother watching Buds, they won't send it to Jersey even if your FFL agrees to such a transfer), so if I were looking specifically for SP-01, I would've been on watch for them ready to order when such an opportunity arises. Normal price for new SP-01 online is in the ballpark of $600 (+/- 5%) + transfer fee of your FFL + mag compliance work (it ships with 18rd mags).

SP-01 Tactical (decocker models, compared to manual safety in "usual" SP-01s) are easier to find, but they are a little harder (and more expensive) to do a trigger job compared to manual safety ones.

I am a little biased here as SP-01 is one of my favorite guns and I love it, LOL :-) I am even thinking about getting another one...

There's also an option to watch CZCustom as they sometimes have small batches of SP-01 Shadow coming. This will hit your wallet with around $900, but IMO it might be the best investment in guns you'd ever make :-))) (yes, I am seriously biased)

I'm sure you can find a really good used one for not too much more.  They are new on gunbroker for 600 bucks.  I'd do a price request from a forum vendor to see what they get or just post a WTB for a used one.  I have had a 92FS for years and it is the one non-1911 semi-automatic that has stood up to the test of time.  My only complaint is the long reset on SA for the trigger which I am having worked out by a gunsmith.

Definitely rent an LC9 before you drop the $$. My wife has one and I hate the loooonnnggg DAO trigger. I haven't had a chance to try the new LC9s (same gun, striker fired) but it has to be better...I don't think it could get any worse. She likes it, and it's her gun so my opinion doesn't really matter.

This signature is AWESOME!!!

Slightly off topic, but not...

If you're looking at pocket guns, look at the Kahr's.  I just picked one up and am mightily impressed with fit, finish, and overall feel of it.  Very nicely made.  I am hoping to get to the range in the next day or so to run some rounds thru it.

Good luck with it all.  I like your list.

I've heard that about the LC9 trigger, I would definitely try it first.  But after handling the Shield in 9mm, I will probably go that route.  I'll try that one out first, too.

Also, to update my above list, I've decided on the following:

Ruger GP100

Ruger SR1911

Most likely a S&W Shield

Possibly the Nickel RIA 1911

That leaves one permit left.  It will probably be between the Beretta 92,CZ 75, or a High Power if I can find one.

I'm also looking into RIA 1911's in the 9mm tactical variety with the small RIA rollmark on the back end of the slide...

One thing to note is that the STI Spartan 1911 is also made by Armscor (Rock island armory) in the Philippines with STI internal parts and specs, then shipped to Texas for final QC.  Can't really go wrong with either... both companies offer an exceptional lifetime warranty

If I had more coin saved up for my next pistol, I would definitely opt for the STI Trojan 1911 in 9mm, which I think are some of the best hand-fitted 1911's a little north of $1k.

I have a Trojan 9mm. It is an awesome gun, incredibly accurate and easy to shoot.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.

Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
