Afternoon British Ex-Pat here

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, was looking for a place like this and glad i found it.

Moved to the USA in 2013, unfortunately have to live in north Jersey as my wife works in NYC, i travel all over the USA for work as a Radiation Tech in Nuke plants.

Anyway thats a little background about myself.

Recently acquired my FID which im extremely happy about, it took a while thats for sure.

I have a bit of a thing for WW2 history, combined with my interest its only natural im getting a Mosin Nagant as a first rifle to learn with.

Im not so new to shooting, but definitely a first time owner.

What i am struggling with is finding a good place to shoot, rifles that is.

I work away alot, sometimes for months on end and i cant really see a benefit of a years membership at a club.

Cherry Ridge is really your best option in N.Jersey. I have a few Mosins myself (ok I have more than a few I have like 20 of them, I have a Mosin buying problem lol). They are no fun to shoot indoors. It's definitely an outdoor rifle, especially with surplus ammo. You will have to join or make friends with someone that can guest you in at CR range but.... The membership is actually pretty cheap for what you get there. Look into it.... ANJRPC cherry ridge range. The only other option is to head south to range 14 you have to join there as well. Or go to PA every time you wish to shoot. Not much else up here outside with the distance your going to want to shoot that type of rifle. Without joining an expensive shooting club you're going to wait a while on a list to join. Cherry Ridge is a cake walk to become a member of.

Ill let you know on the Mosin if the M44 im checking out today is garbage.

The Enfield .303 will come, im just Waaaaaaaaay more fussy on that particular rifle and they start getting pricey for what i want.

Would be great to actually get down to Cherry Ridge as a guest to check it out, although i live in North NJ with my wife, ill actually be spending most of the year in Delta PA with work well (mon-thurs anyway).

Thanks for the warm welcome chaps

That's a hell of a commute - even just coming home on weekends. Welcome to the board, BTW.

You would probably be better off looking for a range nearer to Delta, because, unless your wife is a shooter, I doubt she'll look too kindly on you running off on weekends to entertain your hobby at her expense. There is a very nice store/range facility in New Freedom, PA...

You'll have to investigate private clubs, but you'll find they are far less expensive in PA than they are in NJ.

Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Thanks Bob, and my plan is to do the majority of my shooting in PA while im there.

My wife isnt a big shooter, but she definitely enjoys it on occasion.

As for that hellish commute, yeah its gonna be a bummer.

When the weather finally gets better and i can take the Vette down, i can give my wife my Ford and we can then alternate which will be nicer for me.

Would still be interested in checking out Cherry Ridge however, i dont head down till 10th Feb.

Sunday February 1st at 9:30 am is the next new member orentation at Cherry Ridge. In order to join you have to become a "shooting" member of ANJRPC, being a member of anjrpc is a good idea even if your not joining for the range, they are one of the largest in state 2nd amendment advocacy groups we have here. It's a good thing to support them. For a little more $ you get the family range membership as well, as a bonus. It's half of what I pay to shoot at the indoor range I'm a member of, and way larger.

Here's the range schedule and other information describing the different ranges there. Pistol range, shotgun, 100 yd rifle, and 200-300 yard high power rifle.

I'm planning on joining as a shooting member myself, probably on the Feb 1st orentation. They are always the first Sunday of each month.

Welcome! My step-dad is from England, two of his closest mates visit about every year or so. When they do I always take them to the range. They just love it so much and truly envy us that we have the right (for now ...provided we hold onto it). So I can appreciate how excited you must be. Sounds like you and your misses are pretty good earners. Drop some coin on a range membership! LOL

Its very true, we are just like you grow up watching guns on TV, playing cowboys an Indians.

But id never even held a real firearm until about 9 or 10 years ago, its just so taboo in the UK.

Air rifles are legal though, so i spent a lot of my childhood plinking with my friends, so it was a natural progression when i moved here.

Spending money on a membership isnt a big deal, i would just like to go before and check the place out, try before you buy.

That and i will be about 3 hours away in Lancaster PA most of the year.
