Freedom Munitions... 9mm

So I just got a shipment of New 9mm 124gr RN from Freedom Munitions and spotted this...

 

 

The round on the left measured in at an OAL of 1.052" while the rest of the box came in at around 1.148" - 1.150".  I don't know anything about loading ammo but a quick google search suggests that may have the capacity to double the pressure with a bullet seated in that low? I understand there are a lot of factors that play into OAL with respect to powder type/weight, bullet type/weight, etc, but can a difference of 0.1" produce that much more pressure?

 

I'm not going to fire that suspect round, but I just wanted to say that it might be a good idea to check your ammo coming in from them or anywhere else for that matter.

I've had a round of something like that from another manufacturer as well (Armscor)..  Always god to check your ammo regardless of brand..

Semi-auto rounds are not crimped in the old sense of the word. It as very possible for a bullet to be pushed deeper into the case, just by dropping it. If ap powder like TG is used, there is a lot of empty space in the case. FMJ heads are harder and can slip easier.

Freedom usually loads their rounds week [subsonic], to keep the price down. I doubt that you will do any damage with this round but it is much wiser to throw it away.

Yeah I can see that happening.  The box looked like it was handled pretty rough as well.

Send the picture to them, last time I got one like that they said they would send me a free box of ammo to make up for it.  I was very surprised when UPS came with my free box that was actually three free boxes.

well i just got a response from a lady from "Howell Munitions" instead of FM and surprisingly she immediately blames UPS for shipping damage and that I should be contacted by UPS for inspection?  kind of odd since the outer shipping box is in pristine condition and everything was packed well...  

 

I don't see how someone could blame UPS for damage when they haven't seen the box the products were shipped in...?  I work in manufacturing/distribution and this is completely ass-backwards...  someone definitely saw that f*cked up box and stuffed it in for shipping regardless of condition... 

 

so much for standup customer service lol.

That is odd, when I had a similar issue about a year ago I just sent a picture and said I was disappointed and wanted to make QC aware of the issue, never asked for anything.  About 15 minutes later I got a phone call asking me for the QC number on the inside of the box and then was told they would send me a free box to make up for it.

I sent a reply telling the lady not to file a shipping claim with UPS because it'll be a waste of time.  I've dealt with UPS enough while managing my office to know that they'll laugh at the claim.  It'll just get thrown in a pile and sent to their 3rd party claim service.  Plus, my UPS driver is cool as hell and don't want anyone pointing fingers at him (I'm almost positive he's an avid shooter as well).

 

To be honest this thread was just to remind everyone to check their ammo (new or reman)...  I'm at a whopping 20-cent loss lol for one round.  I'm not expecting or asking for anything out of FM, but now I'm completely turned off by this lady's response.  If it were my CS call, I would've lost a customer blaming the carrier when its clearly a problem with the vendor.

I've run into other issues with FM... A lot of dimpled primers, a couple rounds that were pushed in.

 

Long story short is the inconsistency and the IMT brass they use keeps me from shooting their stuff. It's not bad for what you pay but I'll take my WWB any day and reload the brass.

I found a few dimpled primers and damaged case necks from the reman .223 I picked up last week.  Issues with 2 different cartridges now at the same time...  I know many have had great luck with FM new & reman, but I've just completely lost faith in their QC.

Absolutely. $0.20 a round isn't much of a deal when I can get Blazer Brass for the same price and actually have reusable brass. I can get WWB regularly for about $0.23 a round, and my own reloads are around $0.14. 

 

Saving $0.02-0.03 a round isn't worth the potential issues to me.

I've fired around 4500 rounds of 9mm, 1500 rounds of 45 and 1000 rounds of 38 from FreedomMunitions without a single failure to fire.  That's about a million times better than my success rate with WWB, which usually has at least one dud per box.
