Another transport question...

Recommended Posts

Sorry to make another one of these threads... I know you can't give legal advice but looking for opinions on this situation.

My friend in south Jersey is buying his first handgun this weekend and wants me to go with him to check it out and then do some target practice (purchased at the shooting range). I would be staying at his house overnight. If I transport my handgun according to the law may I bring it to his house, go to the range, then leave it at his house if we go out somewhere? Or is that an illegal transfer? I know not to make any "unnecessary" stops and I will be going to a range but I will also be stopping at his residence... Hope someone can help!

A friends home is not an exempt place to go to. Now maybe if you were picking him up on the way to the range it could be a necessary stop to just pick him up go to range drop him off and go right home. Adding in a overnight stay and the possibility of leaving your gun at his house doesn't sound like you would be within the law. Might be better off with a long gun and then use his hand gun at the range. That might be legal but the laws are so messed up to trap law abiding citizens who knows.

It's an illegal stop/delay in going back to your residence.

But here's a thought:  (assuming you have a NJFID) bring all (20) of your long guns and a trunk full of ammo to "play show and tell" with.  Then find a range that allows the toys ya brought!

Also, whatever you do, don't be like "all over" your friends new hand gun.  Since it's his first, he hasn't developed a relationship yet with the FFL who is responsible for the transfer/sale.  YOU don't wanna be handling that gun too much "to just try it out", since the FFL may start to wonder IF this whole thing is a STRAW PURCHASE, lol!  So do everybody a favor and let your friend handle the transaction w/o your "help".  Old Farts like me have seen it happen in person.  Guy comes in with a "friend" and now there's NO SALE!  A word to the wise.....
