ATF Classifies SS109 and M855 as Armor Piercing

Recommended Posts

next to go will be 7.62x54r...bet $ on that

x54r isn't chambered in handguns so we should be okay with that for now. There are rumors from Black Horse Arsenal, but just photoshop.

There really isn't much else to "go". Every firearm model or caliber that can be imported into this country in any large quantity has already been imported or has been banned.

I'm happy I bought a crate while the going was good. Not fantastic, but good.

Care to take this statement back?

Unless an Obrez is considered an SBR?

As long as no one starts a letter writing campaign to the ATF, we're probably going to be ok on 7.62x54r.

Crap,

Just paid .62 cents per round for 240 rounds for M855! I don't need it but just so I can say I got some!!! :onthequiet:

It is still available but it is not cheap for sure! I hate gougers!!! As pointed out, I can't use it at the range so it will live in my ammo safe

forever probably.

Meh - ordered a little more M855 just in case.... Wideners has Federal Lake City M855 for a decent price.  About 37c/round after shipping

Wow! It went up almost double in less than 2 weeks!!!! Guess I should have got some sooner!

Not really a surprise considering they banned 7n6 only a few months ago for the same reason.  I wonder if the 7n6 ban was a test run for the m855 or if someone pointed out that m855 bullet had the same non-armor piercing make up as the non-armor piercing 7n6 bullets that are now classified as AP?  I picked up 300 rounds of m855 from Dicks for $100 with their coupon and now the same stuff 2 weeks later is more than twice that if you can find it.  Pretty sad.

They will just keep banning if not challanged. Its a foot in the door just like so many other laws that are for "the public good"

There is allot to be said for hoarders I guess. Things are not going to get better anytime soon. Congress lack guts as its constructed now.

Most comprehensive writeup I've seen yet on this situation, including history of how the ATF has twisted the "armor piercing" designation previously for other calibers:

The ATF was beaten back on another bogus interpretation of their rules early last year; ATF ruled that a muzzle device was a "silencer" without even investigating if it lowered the sound of shots.

The manufacturer sued the ATF, won, and got their interpretation overturned.  I wonder if an ammo manufacturer can follow the same path...:

Doesn't seem liike the ammo manufacturers are hurt by this.  They can easily re-tool to use a different bullet or might be able to source bullets that fit the existing machinery.   The ban on imports will mean less competition, higher prices, and more sales.  It's a win for domestic manufacturers.

Domestic manufacturers are already running at full capacity and don't have issues selling off their production.  Less competition and higher prices hurts all of us.
