The CMP wait begins.....do I need any of this stuff?

Recommended Posts

As the topic suggests, I placed an order with the CMP for a special grade in 308......I know, I know, not "authentic" however it seems .308 is a little easier to find and a couple sheckles cheaper. Besides, i may end up with some AR-10 variant in the future so they can share.

Anyway........so Im poking around at what Ill need and what other money I can p*ss away before it gets here. My question is really.......does this "bundle" make sense?

I went looking for the buddy which looks like a safer way to clean the barrel and will keep the "juices" from dripping into the trigger assembly......and I came up with this.

Anything else a new Garand owner should look at? tools? gadgets? gizmos?

Thanks for readin,

Tom

I clean my garands with a bore snake same as I would anything else. I use the but stock tool kit thing for the gas block.

I also pull the action from the stock to clean so I don't worry about stuff driving inside

Lubriplate is a must on these things. Only time I've seen one not work is when someone cleaned it and oiled it but never greased anything.

Special Grade Rifles are $1030 including shipping..........

"CMP Special (.308) M1 Garand. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. A .308 spacer block is installed to prevent the loading of a .30-06 round into the chamber."

That bundle is overpriced AFAIC. You can take the gas plug out with a large plain tip screwdriver without any damage. You can take the barreled action out of the stock for cleaning but it may take a few rounds for it to settle back in the stock before it returns to zero. I usually just stuff a rag by the chamber to catch any drips. You can use any bore guide to clean with a rod from the muzzle. You dont have to use lubriplate. A Garand will run on any kind of grease unless its thick and you're shooting it in sub zero weather. I use Mobil One synthetic grease. Its red so you can see where you put it on, doesn't thicken in cold weather, and I always have it around. I fill a large syringe and use that as an applicator.

You will not regret your purchase

I got my special grade .308 in October and it is such a pleasure to shoot. Its even better when you hand load .308 for it yourself.

Good Luck! Only took 2 weeks for me to get mine!
