Question on pistol load data ??

Recommended Posts

I have a few pounds of tight group powder and I was looking for the load data for 9mm when I check my book and the hodgdon site I don't see for my bullet I want to use. I have the extreme 115 gr RN  plated bullets and the only data that comes up that I can find is for  115 GR LRN and 115 gdhp , since they don't list for plated Rn  does that mean I can not use tightgroup with these bulets or can I use the lower starting load they give on the 115gr gdhp. thanks for the help.

I would think use rn data. And coal for my rn moly coated is 1100 if i remember correctly. Because 115 gr is 115. No matter what the shape is. The oal is what you be concerned with. Thats my thoughts. Who knows i may be inncorrect. But i thought the same thing when i first loaded 9's. I couldnt find an exact match from hodgdon website. So i just used what they had for rn. Made around 2k rounds since and no issues.

According to Hodgdon's website;

"Lead bullets and copper plated lead bullets yield very similar pressure and velocity results, so when the weights are the same, the same data may be used for each."

So I would start with Hodgdon's data, 3.9 for LRN for Tightgroup.

I use Extreme and Berry plated bullets. Cant beat them for price and quality.

Plated bullets are suggested to be loaded at lead bullet data.

Or as said above start at the low end of FMJ bullets and work up from there.

Most plated bullet companies suggest staying under 1200 FPS o the plating is not stripped when leaveing the barrel.

I like Tite Group for 9mm. Just remember it burns hot.

How many forums have you posted this question?

I always start with lead bullet start loads and work up. I haven't had much (none) accuracy success with plated bullets.

Get Richard Lee's Reloading Manual.

>I use mid-range lead data for both x-treme and Berry's

I hope you START with the starting load. Jumping into the mid-range, with your mix of components being different from the manual's, could lead to some nasty surprises. Safety first.

Xtreme  says you can use FMJ loads for their copper plated due to their production process. I have used their 115gr CPRN with 4.2 of Titegroup with a col of 1.100 with very nice results. Good groups and an average velocity of 1080fps.So I just picked up 2 more pounds today.
