Need some help with a decision...

Alright, well for under $150 I got a drop-in quad rail, bipod, two 15/30 hexmags, a cheap 4x acog-style scope and a dremel to hack the front sight off.

 

So, all-in-all I paid $850 for the gun as-is...  Not bad, I'm happy with it.  Instead of sinking money into stuff like a compensator and the other gadgets I was talking about I'll probably just shoot the balls off of this for a few months and whatever i don't spend on ammo I'll save for a rifle length ar - maybe even one chambered in 7.62/.308 or bigger.

As far as my patience would allow me to grind it down with my crappy bench grinder...  And also note I didn't remove it from the gun to do it.

 

 

All painted up nice, painted over the little nick I put in the barrel there too... oops.  Quad rail, bipod and scope on.

 

 

Next weekend (hopefully) I'll be signing up at SJSC and sighting her in.

It's not bolted down to anything I basically live in an apartment, it's a house split into upper/lower, I'm on the upper side.  My old house I had a big beautiful workshop-garage-tinkering area, all nice and private...  Here I have a closet to keep my tools and 25 square feet of office space I claimed in the living room.  Had to downsize after having some job issues, but I'm finally back to solid work and hoping to buy a house by the end of this year...  Hate this small space.  I couldn't bolt the grinder to anything if I wanted to.

 

And by the way, this is a stupid question I'm sure, but I used Krylon extreme-temp paint on it, it's good to 1200 Fahrenheit....  That's sufficient, right?

The paint should be fine.

 

I actually made a stand for mine. I got one of those cookie tins filled it with concrete sunk a piece of 3" PVC into it filled the pipe with concrete and mounted my bench grinder to it. Like a stand. I just didn't want it cluttering up my workbench. It worked out good.

Old and antiquated TTPs for a mission different than what we are talking about. By the time you have realized that the conditions are changing and close one eye, your night adjusted vision has degraded.

 

We are not navigating a jungle. We are not stumbling around a desert under star clusters. No one here is buillding an AR to sit in a fox hole on the Fulda Gap and repel the Cossack invaders.

 

What you are saying, while it may be valid under certain circumstances, is useless in a HD/CQB/FISHing scenario. We are clearing small rooms in a home.

 

The TTPs I am covering were not created by me either. They were developed by folks with much more experience than either you or I have in this skill set. I have been lucky enough to have been taught by them.

 

Keep your white light on as much as possible and both eyes open.

More light is better than less light.

Fight in the dark like you fight in the day: darkness may obscure you but it won't stop bullets - Cover is more important than concealment.

See them before they see you.

It would really be a lot easier for me to give you the last word on this, but you are wrong and there needs to be some clarification. If you stuck to the situation of storming a house by cops with a light and blasting people, fine.

 

What you said about losing night adjusted eye is false. I have done it including going into lit structures. Or, starting in lit locations. Not everybody gets to choose every aspect of the mission, unlike you.

 

As for antiquated TTPs, I personally know military and SF who routinely use this, including in assaults. Recently Echo Tango SoIwontsaythe last and a friend and family member still active.

 

You do what you train to do and what you have to do to get your job done.

 

But you are completely out of your purview and knowledge base at the moment. Do what you need to do, but be very careful about telling other people their TTP are wrong and anything somebody else does that you don't do is worthless. If you are going to post here as a self-appointed authority then you have an obligation not to pretend to rule on things outside your experience and purview. Unless you have everything that we all need to know and no discussion is required. In which case we can just make this a Q & A forum with us asking and you answering. I don't want to sound preachy, but I am not a buddy F'er so I have to give a friendly comment. Be cautious of your mindset, as we all have to.

Hey guys, I just want to throw it out there on the subject of closing one eye as to not lose vision...  Mythbusters did it in relation to a myth saying pirates wore eye patches for this very reason, and they confirmed it...  Keeping one eye closed when changing light conditions will conserve your night adjusted vision.

Jsut out of curiousity, why couldn't you just buy a low profile gas block(cheap item), drift out the 2 FSB pins (L to R)?

 

No need to hack up the mil spec FSB...

That's the plan.  The drop-in rail is just temporary.  I picked it up for $25.  The free float kit I want is $189.  I figured I'd hack it off now because I don't like the mil sights anyway, and it's one less thing I have to screw around with when I get the free float rail.

For future reference, the fsb can be easily removed.  All it takes is knocking out two drift pins and the one small rollpin holding the gas tube on. It would have been quicker than grinding/cutting the fsb and you can buy a low profile gas block for $30 to replace it. It looks cleaner too.

For future reference, the fsb can be easily removed.  All it takes is knocking out two drift pins and the one small rollpin holding the gas tube on. It would have been quicker than grinding/cutting the fsb and you can buy a low profile gas block for $30 to replace it. It looks cleaner too.

Thanks, Eric.  I saw quite a few youtube videos showing what you describe, and I can see it's a pretty easy off, but there were two major points that were in play leading to my decision to just hack it off.  #1: I don't like the mil sights.  I was accurate with them, but they're just anoying to me.  I'd put a $30 RDS on it.  and #2: Why waste $30 on a low profile block when I can just hack off the sight i'll never use anyway?  Especially when I'm going to inevitably cover it with a free-float anyway.
