Best sub $400 .22 Rilfe for Target Shooting

Recommended Posts

Hey All - I am looking to get into long range target shooting but want to get my feet wet with a .22.  My plan is to work on perfecting my shot in the 100 yard range and then moving up from there.  I plan to compete.  I am starting with a .22 for a number of reasons, but a the two mains one are affordability of the gun and ammo so I will practice more, the overall uses of a .22 (i want to own one for survival and fun for plinking anyway).  I plan to step up to a higher caliber rifle I can use for 300 yard + in the next year or so, but I am dead set on getting a .22 now.

That said, what would you folks recommend?  I am currently between the Ruger 10/22 or a Savage Mark II G.

I am left handed but most of the rifles I have been looking at don't seem to have RH or LH specific models.

This is the ruger @ $250

Next up would be the Savage Mark II G @ $240

I also really like the Browning T-Bolt Sporter but it's $650.  If it's truly worth that much more money I will consider it, but there has to be a vast difference in accuracy stepping up to the browning for me to justify the added cost and I am not sure it's there.

I've got to keep in mind that I plan to pick up a quality scope which is going to most likely add another 100-300$ depending on where I land.

While I am not new to shooting, I am new to owning firearms, and would love to hear some input from you seasoned shooters.

Thanks.

You can't go wrong with a Ruger 10/22.  There are thousands of aftermarket parts for the 10/22 so you can buy a basic model and turn it into anything you want, even the basic models are accurate and reliable.  I have a few 10/22's that are set up differently and are a lot of fun.

You don't need to go big money on a scope for a 22, there is very little recoil to mess with the scope so a decent and basic scope will do just fine.

Okay, that is good to know about the scope.  The 10/22 is definitely the front runner; I just want something that I can get scoped in and dead on at 100 yards.  I do love my friends 10/22.  Shoots so nice and love the magazines.

I have the Savage MK11G and love it, with a decent scope it is very accurate for that price point out to 100 yards.

It looks like KY gun has them for < $200-  http://www.kygunco.com/savage-arms-mark-ii-g-22-lr-21bbl-28119

I bought a bolt gun mostly to teach my kids how to shoot, but honestly I could shoot it all day long.  I actually use mine to take breaks between rounds when I am shooting my larger caliber rifles at the range.

Ordered mine last week when they were running free shipping for the weekend. Waiting on Andover Hunt and Fish to tell me mine is in and hopefully picking it up Tuesday!

Consider a CZ with a "Yo Dave" trigger. It's the best trigger I've ever experienced, package for under $400. 10/22 triggers stink out of the box and not even close to the yo Dave even with replacing all parts to Volquartsen. Putting a vortex 6-24 on mine shortly to do the same thing you're trying to do.

10/22 rifles are great, but you are going to run into your $400 budget quickly if you do any modifications.

I'd choose the Ruger American Rimfire for a first quite accurate 22LR rifle.  Uses the same 10/22 magazines, but is (IMHO) more accurate out of the box.

Everyone should own a 10/22. Great place to start.

Picking mine up tomorrow from Andover Hunt and Fish. IMO an awesome deal at $179.99 with free shipping last weekend from Palmetto State.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and a bunch of bolt/pump/lever 22's.

The 10/22 is a great choice, they ship with a factory weaver mount (you supply rings and optic) but here are a few things I changed out on mine:

-Charging handle, way too small for me! I have big hands and the factory one sucked big time, I swapped it out with one of these stainless steel ones ($36)

I replaced the metal bolt buffer with one of these ($4)

I also replaced the extractor claw with an aftermarket one ($7):

Finally, I replaced the plastic sling/barrel sling swivel with a metal one ($10).

Ruger 10/22 hardwood for $236 + FREE shipping + $40 transfer w/ NICS = $276

For all of the above after market parts I spent $57, postage was about $6 so say $63 total.

So grand total $339.00.

All of the aftermarket parts were sourced from www.ruger1022receiver.com (aka Select Fire LLC). I'm planning on building another soon.

Sell the factory barrel and put the extra $60 remaining towards one of these nice bull barrels:

Same deal is still up, I got mine a couple weeks ago and you really can't go wrong with that price. Especially if they run free shipping anytime soon while it's on sale.

Edit: I can;t get a quote in the cart, need to sign in.

If you can, order now. It's usually $18 when they aren't running free shipping.
