FFL/Transfers of online firearms purchases

Recommended Posts

If I purchase a firearm online and have it shipped to a FFL, do I need to notify the FFL before or after I place the order?

I'd call them and ask if they're willing to transfer. You may have to ask them to Fax a copy of their FFL to where you're buying from.

If you're in North Jersey, Ralph (Steel City Firearms) in Wayne charges $40 with NICS and is always willing to do the transfers.

If you're going to need the FFL to hold on to a handgun while waiting for permits, make sure they don't require pickup or charge storage fees after a certain amount of time.

Ihrocker:

FYI - I have purchased both a handgun and rifle online from an out of state retailer and/or manufacturer and had them ship each to my selected FFL, (RTSP). I do not like to leave things to chance nor just assume that others will do what I would like or know what I want, without any communication to establish a clear understanding of expectations.

Therefore, I think it is prudent, once you have finalized the gun purchase to send an email to the appropriate person at your selected FFL. This is a courtesy as well as good practice to avoid any confusion, creating a "paper trail" for referral later. This email is intended to notify them of your purchase transaction and include important information such as the manufacturer and model number of your firearm, date and purchase order confirm number, as well as your name and contact info. I also include the time frame of approximately when they can expect to receive it and the date when you plan to come in to complete the transaction, pay any transfer fee that your FFL imposes and let them process with you the required online NICS with Trenton.

Enjoy your new firearm.....!
