Waterproof Fishing Shoes?

Recommended Posts

Looking for recommendations on a pair of waterproof shoes to wear when I go trout fishing. I go to Montana every summer and spend most of the fishing time in a boat on the Missouri, so waders aren't needed, but between hopping in and out of the boat, I need a comfortable pair of shoes that I can wear all day that will stand up to lots of water. I'd also use them when fishing lower/calmer stretches of river around here.

My old man and others I know wear Keen sandals. For whatever reason, I am NOT a sandal guy, I will never wear them, so please don't recommend a pair. Was wondering if anyone had experience with Keen shoes that are not sandals. Maybe something like this: http://www.keenfootwear.com/product/shoes/men/class-5-tech/midnight%20navy!gargoyle

Something like that or similar seems perfect. Not married to a specific brand. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I lived in Wyoming for 5 years and did tons of trout fishing in and around Yellowstone and the Tetons. When I would do a float trip I always wore waders and wading boots over them when we stopped and got out of the boat. Felt bottoms on the shoes were key to not slipping. good luck.

I do bring waders and wading boots along in the boat and put them on when we actually stop and fish outside the boat for any amount of time. I'm talking about what to wear the other 90% of the time. Montana in July gets plenty hot, as you know. 90+ degrees every day I was there last year. I'm not wearing waders and boots unless necessary! Lol.

Boat shoes will withstand wetness. Diving boots will too but if dry they will make your feet sweat and even if wet will be.hot in the summertime. My wife bought me a pair of Goretex shoes. They are a slip on easy to get in and out. They are also waterproof but very comfortable in winter and summer and keep your feet dry. They are also much more rugged than boat shoes or dive boots.

Vibram Five Fingers may be an option...

I've tried water shoes but once they get wet, they can get very uncomfortable.  They don't dry fast either.  My feet will be squishing around inside for hours.

There is a whole category of "Amphibious" athletic shoes out there, though not easy to find in stores, with the features you're looking for. Water proof, breathable rubber and mesh constuction, non slip soles with DRAIN holes and NOT sandals or boots. The offerings from Adidas and Vivo look the least like Keen's.

Zappos has a large selection of current offerings:

6PM.com has cheaper last year closouts of the same.

Those Adidas Jawpaw look good. I may actually get those for use on our upcoming cruise...

Nice price, too. Definitely worth considering. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Also stumbled upon the Simms Harbor Gore-Tex shoes and Simms Mariners. Both also in the running.

I use Teva churns for wet wading. they were a little lacking in their grip so I added some felt strips. I like them because they dry in minutes and are very light but there is no ankle support. even without the support I do wear these to hike in to fish places off the beaten path. FYI check all local laws regarding felt soles if you go with a felt sole or add some felt to the shoe because many states are outlawing felt soles. If you are allowed to use them please decontaminate the felt when changing bodies of water to prevent the spread of invasive plants

I fish from boats regularly. In warm weather I wear a pair of white Crocs -- yes, they're dorky, but they're very comfortable all day and I can hose them off when I'm done. In cool/cold weather I opt for my Marlin deck boots -- again very comfortable, surprisingly light, and completely fit to be hosed off when I'm done. My two cents.

On a budget I'd say any garden variety beach wet shoe from WalMart or similar store should do.  If ya want something more grippy and trendy, try a surf shop. If the shoes are only going to be occasionally wet, topsiders are a great choice.  If you think there will be broken beer bottles and other sharp pointy objects in the water, I'd go with slip on muck shoes.
