lhrocker 5 Posted May 18, 2015 After waiting out the FID's and finally getting it a couple of weeks ago, I get my first 3 firearms. I decided to start off with 22LR so I got a Ruger 10/22 takedown, a Ruger American Rimfire and a M&P22. The two Rugers I got locally with the Takedown from Andover Hunt & Fish, and the American Rimfire from Steve_G from the forum. Both rifles look great and I can't wait to take them to the range this week. The M&P was purchased on Palmetto during their 22 Plinker sale, so I should have that this week. One quick question thought. Is the bag that comes with the Ruger Takedown good enough to take to the range? How about the American Rimfire? I don't want to bring the box, so does it need a lockable case/bag? How about a guitar case (seriously)? Any info on the rifles would be a plus. I think I know how to transport the pistol. seamusSU 0 Posted May 18, 2015 I actually use a guitar case for my American Rimfire and 10/22. I picked up a soft gig bag from guitar center and put on a few velcro straps to secure the rifles. It works great. Unfortunately I don't have a picture on my phone.
lhrocker 5 Posted May 18, 2015 Thanx for the reply. That sounds great as I have lots of gig bags.

DeerSlayer 241 Posted May 18, 2015 Thanx for the reply. That sounds great as I have lots of gig bags. You could wrap it in a blanket if you wanted as long as it's unloaded and you have a FPID card, technically you can transport un cased unless your going hunting. The game code specifically states your gun must be in a case during transport to hunting activities. Nothing wrong with a guitar case soft or hard. I actually have a hard case I've been thinking about making into an AR case. With some foam. Simon Peter usually has soft cases outside in front of the store for $10-$15 bucks though. Can't say no for that price.
T Bill 649 Posted May 18, 2015 Stick them in a bag of your choice, toss them in the trunk and get to the range. Get a nice 4 power for the RAR and a nice red dot like the Bushnell TRS-25 for the takedown. When your ready let us know and we'll help you adjust that RAR trigger and drop in some nice aftermarket parts on that takedown. You won't be disappointed. Love them Rugers in 22LR they are nice. Closest second to them for me are my old Marlin Model 60s, you know the ones that NJ considers assualt weapons because of their over limit tube feeds (fixed that with a dull tubing cutter). I actually inherited a Glenfield Marlin Model 60 from my grandfather with the 18 round tube. Had it modified to be NJ legal. But boy, is that thing accurate. The 'Micro-grooving' is insane! lhrocker 5 Posted May 18, 2015 I was looking at the Marlin Model 60 before getting the takedown. There are just too many good rifles in the $200 price range. I think I made right decision by going with the Rugers.
T Bill 649 Posted May 18, 2015 You certainly did as the Marlins are not what they used to be, IMHO, since Remington got a hold of them. Plenty of aftermarket items for those Rugers.

lhrocker 5 Posted May 23, 2015 I picked up the M&P on Tuesday. It arrived on Monday but the person who was there was overwhelmed because she was short staffed. I dropped by Tuesday and saw Garrett a he was going fishing. The paperwork took about 30 minutes total as there was only one person working and a couple of customers came in. All in all, I would definitely use them again. Everyone at the store is veer friendly and accommodating. Will go to RTSP this weekend to shoot all my new toys. Now to start my 9mm quest. maintenanceguy 510 Posted May 23, 2015 The Unofficial Transport Rules (not official until you talk to a lawyer) In NJ, it's illegal to possess or carry a firearm unless you're doing so under one of the exemptions. NJSA 2C:39-6 sections e and f lists the exemptions to the rule above. This section tells you when you can transport and it applies to handguns, rifles, and shotguns. It is legal to transport handguns, rifles, and shotguns: Between a gun shop and you home or business, between your home and business, between your home or business and a gunsmith or between residences if you are moving. To a rifle range if you’re a member and the range has filed a copy of its charter with the superintendent and annually submits a list of its members to the superintendent To hunt with a valid hunting license To or from any exhibition or display of firearms (there is a list of organizations that can host) as long as the superintendent has been notified of the event at least 30 days prior But you must transport in the manner described in section g. "All weapons being transported under paragraph (2) of subsection b., subsection e., or paragraph (1) or (3) of subsection f. of this section shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported, and in the course of travel shall include only such deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances.” Exception to the Exception? If you have an FID, you can transport rifles and shotguns (not handguns) anywhere (except for schools, public buildings, etc.) if you're doing so cased and unloaded as required in g above. So with an FID, you can keep a trunk gun but you can't go to some specific places. I know lots of farmers who keep a shotgun in a gun sock behind the pickup truck seat all the time. Legal with an FID. NJSA 2C:39-5.c. Rifles and shotguns. (1) Any person who knowingly has in his possession any rifle or shotgun without having first obtained a firearms purchaser identification card in accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.2C:58-3, is guilty of a crime of the third degree. One more odd transport rule. I'm not really sure how the courts would interpret this. 2C:39-6 (f) Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent: (1) A member of any rifle or pistol club organized in accordance with the rules prescribed by the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, in going to or from a place of target practice, carrying such firearms as are necessary for said target practice, provided that the club has filed a copy of its charter with the superintendent and annually submits a list of its members to the superintendent and provided further that the firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section; I've wondered if that means that If I join a club, it's now legal to transport to my friend's farm to target shoot (a place of target practice). If so, clubs should offer $50 memberships that don't include range time. I'd join one.

(Of course they have it back on sale for $22.99) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Allen-Ruger-Flagstaff-10-22-Rifle-Case-Black/30596793 I was inpatient and picked mine up at DSG and paid $29.99. If I had known they had it back at $22.99, I would have shipped to my Walmart.
DeerSlayer 241 Posted May 24, 2015 Got mine from Simon Peter they had it in stock $30. Made for the 10/22 specifically, rifle fits perfectly in it. Has a nice pocket for BX15's
InFamous 311 Posted May 24, 2015 I just realized I have no idea why I put the case in this thread. I think I meant to put it in the .22 under $400 thread lmao oops, still pertains since lhrocker did purchase a takedown. He'll need a case anyway
maintenanceguy 510 Posted May 26, 2015 It used to be fairly common, at least in South Jersey, for the dealer to wrap your handgun in butcher's paper like a steak and tie it with string to make it a securely tied package. I've transported in the original factory cardboard box closed and fastened with a piece of scotch tape on the floor of the passenger's seat. "shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported"

But I like the butcher paper idea, I'm just not trying it since I'm a jinx and if it isn't in a hard case or box it gets FUBAR.
InFamous 311 Posted May 26, 2015 My 10/22 was locked in the trunk, in the factory cardboard box. I locked it just in case some hobo came across and could run 40-60 MPH while I drove and opened my trunk to steal my gun he didn't know was there...
