Mossberg MVP Varmint issue

Recommended Posts

I have a Mossberg MVP varmint bolt action in 5.56. Like the gun a lot but I'm having one issue with the mag feeding. Seems I need to hold the mag up into the mag well a little for the bolt to catch the next round and feed it. If I don't, the cartridge doesn't make it up into the chamber. Looks like it hits the receiver just below where it needs to be. Hold the mag up as the bolt is brought forward and it feeds fine.

This happens with the stock Mossberg mag and a 15 round PMag from my AR. Mossberg says this gun is designed to accept AR mags. I've read in another thread here that the well is based on the STANAG mag. But that mag is supposed to be slimmer. That doesn't seem to fit my issue.

Does anyone else who has this gun have or had this issue? I'll take a closer look tonight. I don't expect to find an easy way to snug up the mag. But I'll take a look.

Will also call Mossberg and see if they have any info that will help. Last resort will be to ship it back to Mossberg and let them take a look.

Ammo I'm using is PMC 55 gr XTC. Tried 4 different magpul p-mags.

Thanks Shawn. I saw that back in 2013 you were considering one.  There must be something going on with the components that hold the mag in the mag well.  Does a mag in your feel more sloppy than say an AR?  The mag in my MVP moves a lot.

I agree on the bolt.  First thing I noticed when I unboxed it and inserted the bolt.  Thought I did something wrong.

If I can get it feed reliably without playing with the mag, I'll be happy. Although I'd like to get a new scope at some point.

Nice scope.  Nice reticle options. I was looking at Nikon P-223 and considering another Leupold.  Will have to take a look at the Redfield.

thnx Shawn.

I spoke to Mossberg.  The support guy wanted to send me a new mag which is probably pointless.  He recalls someone else with a similar problem who was sent a new mag.  But I want to take a look at the magazine guide and the other parts that hold the mag in.  Something isn't holding the mag up high enough.
