Marksmanship Training Instruction

Recommended Posts

Hello

I'm a fairly new shooter and rather than start off just firing away, I was hoping to find (reasonably priced) rifle instruction. Does anyone know of any classes or instructors in the North Jersey area? Central Jersey is fine too. My home range is Cherry Ridge but I live in Bergen County.

As an aside I have a NM elk hunt coming up at the end of the year so I expect 300-400 yard shots thus I need to get started right fast.

Thanks

Sam

I highly recommend attending an Appleseed:  https://appleseedinfo.org/index.html

$60 for two days of rifle marksmanship training interspersed with heritage lessons and camaraderie with like-minded people.  Upcoming ones in Hopewell Junction, NY, Elverson, PA, Audobon, PA or Manheim, PA.

It will give you a good foundation to practice on your own for your upcoming elk hunt.

You are smart to want some form of instruction and develop good habits instead of learning bad habits and trying to correct them later. Check the NRA instructor site for basic rifle classes in your area. Appleseed is also a great idea. you could also look into a rifle team in the area, high power or rimfire to hone your skills. When I shot High Power I got help from others to correct some of my novice mistakes.

Appleseed seems good but I have to get a full weekend away from the family which is a difficult maneuver. I know NRA Basic Rifle is offered pretty commonly. I just thought that might not be enough. So even if I do that I would like some additional help.

Only thing I found outside of the above two suggestions was Griffin & Howe and that's mighty pricey.

Hi. I can't speak for any of the suggestions other than NRA Basic Rifle. First thing to know is that one can't really take this course in a single day. The class and range focus on learning and shooting the five core rifle positions: prone, sitting, kneeling, standing and bench. These are all used in hunting or competition. The class also works through the parts of a rifle, different rifle actions (bolt, lever, pump, semi-auto etc), how to load and unload safely, how to use a sling, the five shooting fundamentals, how to use and adjust sights, how ammunition is constructed and functions, and all on a background of safety safety safety. It is a great course and everyone learns something, even experienced shooters. However, what this course is *not* about is marksmanship; it is about fundamentals, grounding and safety - we are offering that course soon as an all day Saturday half day Sunday class. I am sure you will like it and that it will prepare you for longer range work (I can recommend an instructor for that, not myself).

Either way, have a great time on your elk hunt!!

I see your last class was in May and the next class isn't until November. That's quite a ways off for me. Are you planning on having anything in between? Also yes any 200+ yards recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

While I can shoot under 1MOA at 200, I don't consider myself qualified to teach that skill. PM me for details.

For those who want NRA Basic Rifle before November, I can run a dedicated class for four or more; again, PM me.

Thanks everyone and happy shooting!!
