best defensive handgun training

Recommended Posts

im looking to finally start taking some handgun classes. Ive looked into RTSP, Gunforhire, even tactical response  but I'm still on the fence because the costs vary

what are some things i should know or look out for?  What first class should I take?

Ive been shooting for a while now and would like something beyond the "never touched a gun" crowd lol

I would start with either

http://rtsponline.com/defensive-handgun-skills/

or

http://gunforhire.com/urban-pistol-1/

From there ..... talk to your instructors at the end of the class for your best plan of future training.....

I have taken BOTH of the above courses....  You will learn a lot......

I believe in starting with the basics like an NRA Basic pistol class. Any "tactical" class worth attending starts with, and reinforces, the basics. From there it is a matter of availability, timing and cost. I have done defensive or tactical classes with a few different instructors. They all went over static shooting then shooting on the move, shooting to stop (you don't shoot to kill or shoot to injure, you shoot to stop) then they all had different ideas of what next. After the shoot One instructor says to hold the gun muzzle up, another says muzzle down and a third says to re-holster. Some say to reload right away others say not to waste ammo with an early reload. The foundation will be the same, each instructor brings their own experiences and theory's with them. You will learn something new form any decent instructor. There is nothing wrong with starting local and affordable and branching out from there.

Ive been to Academi, which was the old Blackwater a bunch of times.Even though it cost some with travel and all,its worth it in the long run. Most of the classes offered from most places are only 2 maybe 3 days.Academi is a full week. With a full week you really have a chance to hone your skills.Plus they have something like 50 ranges plus shoot houses.Depending on the class youll get some low light work in to.If your gonna use your weapon system for home defense, shooting in the dark and low light training is  a must. You will definitely get your moneys worth and more.Good Luck
