Polak 3 Posted June 21, 2015 I may be taking a rifle class next month. What kind of AR mag pouch would you recommend? Single or double.
checko 180 Posted June 21, 2015 What kind of class is it? I'd go with at least double most likely. Who is the instructor? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
High Exposure 5,661 Posted June 21, 2015 What kind of class? What are the requirements for bringing ammo to the line? Most instructors will tell you how many rounds/mags you are required to carry on your body to complete their drills. Where do you want to mount/carry the pouches? Belt or chest? I prefer single mag pouches to double for most occasions. I keep an emergency reload in a single pouch on my belt, and carry three across my chest in a triple-shingle or chest rig. n4p226r 105 Posted June 21, 2015 i did a vickers shooting method 1 day carbine class and i had no issues with a dual set of HSGI tacos on the raven concealment rig.
checko 180 Posted June 21, 2015 I like to have as many mags on me as possible (within reason) so I don't spend all my time cramming mags and hoping I have enough to finish the next drill Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Vlad G 345 Posted June 21, 2015 I like to have as many mags on me as possible (within reason) so I don't spend all my time cramming mags and hoping I have enough to finish the next drill As I tell new shooters at USPSA matches, the only time you can have to much ammo is when you are swimming. To the OP, ask the instructor what he recommends. You don't have any now so its not like he is going to recommend against something you already have. Personally I like single mag bladetech pouches on my belt, one in front of my 4 pistol mags, one behind them for dealing with prone reloads but I'm a gamey gamer so my choices are driven by that. I have some form of chest rig which I used for one match once and practiced a bit with and that had 3 double pouches and it seemed ok, but I'd take HE's advice on chest rigs not mine. Blacksmythe 71 Posted June 21, 2015 I have a SOE micro rig I used for the last few years. Just recently started using HSGI tacos on a PALS rig I can change around. It allows me to carry more of these 15 rounders since i'm going to take more NJ classes this year.
Polak 3 Posted June 22, 2015 It's an 8 hour class tought by Spartan group (Combat Carbine 2 class).
checko 180 Posted June 22, 2015 You may benefit from reading this thread. http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/57792-chest-rigs/?hl=%2Bchest+%2Brigs Its a long read but a lot of guys helped me pick some real quality gear. I'm still perfecting my rig and with time you will find what works for you as well.
T1Defense 17 Posted June 22, 2015 are you using a belt or chest rig/plate carrier setup?
RecessedFilter 222 Posted June 22, 2015 I'd get a chest rig - Beez combat systems. They ship fairly fast and I have a few of them. Made very well.
High Exposure 5,661 Posted June 22, 2015 I took a 3 day CQB class with Spartan in December of 2004(5?) at the FBI range at Ft Dix. It was an excellent class. Get a single belt mounted mag pouch that will fit on the belt that will carry your holster. I use a belt mounted Comp-Tac Kydex pouch when I am not wearing a full war-belt: http://www.comp-tac.com/magazine-pouches/ar-magazine-pouch-belt-clip-10392 Then get a Blue Force Gear 10-Speed Chest rig: https://www.blueforcegear.com/ten-speed-m4-chest-rig.html This setup is ideal giving you an emergency speed reload pouch on your belt and 4 mags to backfill from or to conduct tac-loads with. It's also quality gear and very affordable. Watch this video starting at around 3:30 for a quick idea of what I mean regarding ammo management: Travis can be a bit long winded and sometimes you need a dictionary to parse what he is saying but he puts pretty good info out there most of the time. Also, with the BFG 10speed rig you can mount an IFAK/Blowout/gunshot kit to side of the mags and then add a utility or extra mag pouch to the other side. T1Defense 17 Posted June 22, 2015 I have used the following with all good results TAG SOE CRYE Fast Mag SOTECH EAGLE Tactical Tailor Currently for my duty rig, I use a Crye JPC with SOE mag pouches. My belt is a tactical tailor belt with fast mag pistol pouches and SOE AR pouches.
T1Defense 17 Posted June 22, 2015 I would vote for a molle chest rig, so you can customize where you want the pouches. Some of the rigs that have pouches already sewn onto them don't work for some people. The molle just gives you the versatility to put your pouches anywhere. I had a haley d3 that i sold. Id go for an SOE rig.
checko 180 Posted June 22, 2015 I'm very happy with my tactical tailor rig with the x harness. Very comfortable and adaptable. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Polak 3 Posted June 22, 2015 I just went with 2 mako 556 mag "pouches" because they're for the belt and decently cheap.
Krdshrk 3,877 Posted June 22, 2015 It also depends on what size mags you have. Do you have 15/20's or 15/30's? Ranger plates or Magpuls on them? Shorter mags can get lost inside mag pouches... Magpuls add bulk and can turn double pouches into single pouches...
Blacksmythe 71 Posted June 24, 2015 Nice and small. Great for classes and quick response. I have also used active shooter bags in classes. Those are interesting and take more practice.
Polak 3 Posted July 13, 2015 I took the carbine 2 class today. I was fun but hot outside. I'd be willing to take a Pistol 2 class also.
