Hello, Visiting NJ next month

Recommended Posts

I am currently in california, and I'll be visiting the Trenton area next month.  What can an out of state resident do in the area firearmswise?

Are there any ranges that rent?  I will be with NJ residents, although they are not firearms people, yet...

I understand that I am not allowed to bring any of my personal arms into NJ.

Thanks,

Not very much, I'm afraid. You would have to find a range that would be willing to rent to you. Many are not willing to rent to a single person who is unknown and who comes in wanting to rent a firearm but does not own any (at least not in that state). There have been several instances where that was done, only to have the renter use the rented weapon to commit suicide right on the range. I guess the logic being, if you own your own weapons (and possess them immediately), you don't need to rent one of *ours* for that purpose.

If you were staying in the northern part of NJ, I'd recommend the Woodland Park Range. PM Anthony (gunforhire on this forum) and he might be able to help you.

I have a similar problem, but of my own doing. I was a member of a range here, but I moved away and took all my "inventory" with me. So when I'm back in this area, I'll have to rent as well. I think they know me well enough at my former range.  We'll see.

Several commercial ranges are within 45 minutes travel time.  Garden State Shooting Center is a straight shot due east of the Trenton area.  They are a great bunch with customer service as the PRIORITY!

Bringing someone with you when you rent guns is a necessary evil (for most people) these days due to aforementioned suicides at several commercial operations that rent firearms.  Of course common sense also applies:

If I wished to shoot alone (to check the place out first), I'd call and ask to speak to a manager or partner, get their email, and then send them email copies of every membership card i carry, I.E.:  NRA Life Member, NRA Certified Instructor & CRSO credentials, IDPA credentials, USPSA credentials, NMLRA credentials, Boy Scout Merit Badge credentials, etc., etc.  Proving that I'm a "Shooter of Known Ability" takes away the threat that I present to any range in the entire Country.  I highly doubt that I'd be turned-away.  All anyone has to do is look-up my Facebook page to see a 6' FLAME coming out the end of my black powder revolver (my cover photo)......

So my advice is to call in advance, get someone's email that manages the place, send what you got to prove you aren't a threat (even if it's pheasant hunting picture with you in hunter orange next to your harvest or a video of you plinking) and see what they say.  It couldn't hurt.......

From my visits to southern CA, the rule against solo gun rentals seem to be pretty common there as well. Actually, I can bring my guns to CA since they don't have the ridicuous to/from exempted location restrictions (not that they don't have their own bull$hit to deal with).

This, but don't go on a Thursday, Friday or saturday night. The "clientele" during those hours is a little less than pleasant. I've foudn Saturday & Sunday afternoons to be fine.
