Need to Thread a Saiga Barrel - Recommend a Shop?

I've got my Saiga conversion to the point where I want to thread the barrel and weld a brake on before I Duracoat it.

 

Can anyone recommend a shop that can do this for me (preferably in the Somerset or Mercer area)?

 

Also, does anyone have any experience with this brake? It's NJ compliant as far as I understand since it doesn't act as a flash hider. Any suggestions regarding other brakes would be appreciated as well.

Do you mind telling me how much they charged? I'm trying to get a ballpark estimate on how much the front end work is going to cost in addition to buying the brake itself

Another option is to leave the end of the barrel as is just crowned.

I'm going back and forth on that idea. I like the looks of a brake on an AK, but if it's going to be monumentally expensive to do it, I could live without it; however, if I do it I want to make sure that it's done right.

 

I talked to one guy about the threading and he seemed to be real hesitant to give me a number. I have a feeling that it was because a) it wasn't an AR15 and b) it has to be threaded left-hand.

carolina shooters supply has the kit to do it yourself....its pretty straight forward and if you're moderately handy you should have no problem doing it and the kit is no doubt a fair bit cheaper that paying for the service....i have done several with the same kit...so think of the cost of the kit as an investment

I thought about doing myself but wasn't sure if I would be breaking the rules. Did you weld the brake on yourself?

i did...i cut off the "shroud" close to the front sight post....threaded up tight to it...then installed and tig welded the brake to the sight base...touched it up with the flat black b.c. touch up marker.. could hardly tell it wasn't factory...but since you're cerakoting...no worries about matching the finish like mine...

It's tempting to try it myself...How do you cut through the barrel shroud? I'm guessing that you would use a pipe cutter to reach the actual barrel?

i initially considered doing that but due to the width of the cutter body it was going to result in the cut being 1/2"or so from the sight ....i opted to go the dremel route with a cutoff wheel and went slow to get a straight cut and not hit the barrel.....

FWIW I've used T1 Defense several times. It will be done right. They are easy to deal with, quick turnaround and they cerakote on premise as well. I have no affiliation with them other than being a happy customer.

Mike from Tier 1 is on this board and hopefully will chime in. Also you should definitely cerakote vs duracote. Duracote is not as durable.

Mike (T1) reached out to me and got the information that I was looking for. I went back and forth on the Duracote vs Cerakote question. I'm going to go Duracote on this round but may Ceracote my next conversion

Yep - now I just have to wait for the UPS guy to deliver the brake to me.

I just picked up my Saiga from Tier 1 a short while ago. They did a great on the threading and the welding of the compensator. I'll post a picture when I get a chance
