Magazine Fed Shotguns

Recommended Posts

I would rather not load single rounds or pump to run or any of that. The only thing that makes sense to me is mag fed shotguns.

I read a 2011 review of the Saiga 12 and they crucfied it. Is it improved now? Have not seen any great reviews for anything else.

So can anybody clue me on any mag feds  equal to the 870 or Mossberg 500?

This is for basic home defense. No hunting or trap shooting. Needs to be NJ legal.

Thanks.

Look I just committed my own snafu of switching up the topic. I think the OP doesn't want to even load one by one into a semi for a run and gun. I just assumed it was about auto or not

Saiga 12's newer production for most part are reliable. There is still many that have reliability issues running low brass and may require a upgraded spring, puck and valve kit. Mine out the box was great, My buddy bought one recently and it won't cycle a lot of types of ammo. It all comes down to the number of ports and how well they were drilled out in the gas system. Which is a fixable issue.

if you are going to run heavy buck or slugs saiga 12 will run fine.. I have a 14in version that runs both of those without issue.. so a stock one out of the box will do the same.. with that said the factory trigger is horrible.. so I would not personally recommend it... I am not going to beat to death the whole reason I dislike a shotgun for home defense.. your choice.. but if you must I would think that pump offers a lot of advantages.. you can run almost ANY ammo through a pump gun.. where as something like a Saiga will be more picky.. the mossberg 500 pump I had held quite a bit of ammo..

just curious.. but if multiple shots are the concern.. why not an AK in a rifle caliber.. they are longish.. but offer multiple shots.. fast reload...I wonder what 5.45x39 would be like for home defense.. lol

Thanks Gents. Good feedback. Yes , I  am trying to avoid loading single shells.

The 'spray' effect is of interest given a dark place, crappy eyes, etc.  Somebody also makes a  laser that prints a pattern to match your ammo/distance.

I do have a Saiga AK in 762.

There is no spray, depending on the gun and the ammo, you don't get meaningful spread of buckshot until 20 yards or so. Not much further you now have to worry about where the rest of the pellets end up.

Realistically, what scenario do you envision where 6-8 rd of buckshot won't solve the problem or the problem just isn't one you can solve with a shotgun?

Correct. It would be more accurate to say that when people look down that long barrel with only a front sight they tend to hit what they are "pointing" at under stress, regardless of their experience or lack thereof. And it makes a very unfriendly hole.

Not my choice, but I wouldn't feel unarmed with one. Its track record is very consistent.
