Couple questions for the Carbine match, if its rifle only whats the difference between open and tac-optics?

How far is the farthest shot? How many mags and does it matter where they are on the belt for tac op? How much $ for non members?

Thanks Jim

What's the difference between Tac-optics and Open?

Short version:

Open: everything goes, bipods, multiple optics, coffee grinder, whatever you wan to attach to the gun

Tac-Optics: SINGLE amplified optic, no bipods or supporting devices (but 2 strapped mags acting as a monopod is fine), comp has to smaller then 1x3"

Tac-Iron: A single non-amplified optic (red dot) or iron sights. Same as Tac-Optics for everything else.

(backup irons allowed in all divisions)

When registering, under "Categories", which one should a soon to be 37 year old male check off?

None?  In shooting events Categories generally refer to a group of people who may be different then the norm for whatever reason, depending on attendance we may recognize "High lady", "HIgh LEO", "High Senior" etc as winners of their category.

Thanks Vlad. Can you explain what U major means? That's what I registered under.

Those would be irrelevant for this match. Normally, for pistol matches, we want to know your USPSA classification is any (U is unclassified), and minor would be the powerfactor of your ammo.

These are irrelevant for the rifle match, as there is no classification nor any major/minor ammo issues, but the form is generic.

Are mag pouches mandatory for this? Or can I put mags in my pocket or on a chest rig?

it depends on how much you plan to miss. I have almost never seen a single stage that requires more then 30-45 rounds, so 3 mags would do, but I have seen people run out of ammo from missing a lot.

Shit. Well I don't plan on missing at all, but what I plan on and what happens are two different things. How are the stages and targets set up? Is is a combo of paper and steel? What are the distances? I plan on attending, but would like as much info as possible so I can best prepare myself.

I have no idea what the stages will be this year, but based on experience you can expect a mixture of targets from full size USPSA/IDPA paper at 5 yards to 4" clays at 50 yards, to 6-10" steel at 100 yards. and everything in between. You will probably get to shoot these from all sorts of position from off-hand and on the move, from supported on walls or props, all the way to prone.  Under time pressure.

You are worrying to much about it. Bring 4 mags so you can hold 60rd, bring 200-300 rounds of ammo (you will bring a lot back home, but better to have more then not enough), hearing protection, eye protection, water, snacks and sun screen and enjoy the ride. Your first match is bound to be overwhelming, you will spend most of your time worrying about not breaking the safety rules, and odds are you won't place too high.  All of this is normal, but you will also have a blast and you will have a better idea what it is like for the next time.  Think of it this way, how much did "the talk" apply to your first sexual experience? It's kinda like that.

The one thing you should absolutely do ahead of time is make time to know your zero's and know exactly where your rifle will hit from 1 yard to 100 yards (and ideally beyond, but it won't matter at OB). The two biggest problems I see with new shooters at matches it not knowing where their rifle shoots at different distances, and having rifles that just won't run with the ammo they brought.

Great advice! I'm not worried about my score, just want to have fun, be safe, and hopefully expand my shooting experience. Thanks again!

Oh. And great words of advice. Listen up and dont ignore. Ready!!!' Dont put 15 rds in your blocked ar mags. Put 14. Put 15 and youll probably see what might happen. Not on all mags. But most. Anyone thats done these matches correct me if im wrong.
