BATFE list of Muzzle Device Classifications

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if they have a list, and if so, where I can find it?  I'd like to make a list of parts for a 3 gun AR, but of course I want to make sure all parts are NJ compliant.  From what I understand, NJ compliant muzzle devices are dependent upon BATFE's official classification of the device.  Correct me if I'm wrong though, please.  I'd like to learn as much as possible.

Thanks,

MM

The BAFTE list is woefully incomplete and out of date.  As long as a muzzle device is not an obvious flash hider and doesn't list flash hiding in it's description you're generally fine.  Some people will say "does it pass the pinky test" (is the opening larger than your pinky) but that's not a good test either.  Look for Muzzle Brakes or Compensators in the description.

Primary Arms lists a lot - and defines them as Brakes/Compensators or Flash Hiders.

But to confuse thing, the PWS FSC series of muzzle devices not only lists flash hiding capability in the description but also in the name (Flash Suppressing Compensator). Yet they have a letter from the ATF that says it's not a flash hider and I've seen pictures of many builds on this forum that use an FSC. Sigh, gotta love the ambiguity and inconsistency generated by stupid gun laws.

Same Confusion exists with BCM Comps and BattleComps too.

As long as it's not an outright flash suppressor you should be fine.

I know of no confusion surrounding the Battle comp. There are concerns about the BCM do to its odd opening shape etc etc.

I thought there was with the Battle Comp... oh well..  I do have the BCM Comp on my 16" AR... It doesn't hide the flash at ALL...

You should see the "flash" when I dump a BETA from an 11.5" barrel with an FSC at an indoor range. The sparks actually start bouncing off the lane walls and ceiling and coming back and hitting me. The only downside is that I get 20 years of gunshot residue dumped on me from the blast vibration.

Yes, I was the one that finally got full auto rifle shut down at Classic Pistol :D

I don't think it was the complaints that my shit went right through everybody's hearing protection, I think it was that they are always running Act 235 classes and as soon as I started the classes broke into complete mayhem and they couldn't get them back from the range glass window and into their seats. Sometimes it is kind of fun when you get a little unexpected attention :)
