The Mark 23 needs to be on the list, I'd say.

Why? It didn't influence the industry, it was a flop in the role for which it was designed, it hasn't rocked the competition world, it wasn't some watershed change in manufacturing, it has little to no historical significance.

I think it is significant because it was the only weapon platform that I can think of that was designed from the ground up to be an offensive platform versus a defensive one. Not to mention its performance in various torture tests and its inability to die.

 

Besides, it's never clarified what they mean by "best" handgun. If we are talking about most influential guns, then you have to mention the VP70 because it pioneered the polymer frame and striker mechanisms. The gun wasn't particularly good, but it influenced modern handguns in a big way.

There is a reason why the motto offensive handgun had exactly one example. We also had the dart guns, and fliche guns and all sorts of failed notions. The mk 23 is on the same list to me, ideas that sounded good at the time but turned out to be terrible in practice.
