Fingerprinting Question

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

The last time I was finger printed was around march 2011. I had thought the finger prints expire after 3 years, unless a permit is processed within those 3, then it extends 3. But I read on here its 5 years. Can anyone help me out? Id rather not pay for new finger prints next month when I apply for handgun permits.

Also, I will be getting fingerprinted for a substitute teachers liscense soon, can I use the same set of prints for both? Or do I need to pay double?

Any help is appreicated!

Fingerprints are only required, by state law, once. After that you do a non-criminal background check (now on-line) in leiu of prints. The operative phrase in that sentence is "by state law" - your local PD (issuing authority) can require prints every time you apply, should they wish to add an additional impediment. So you are on the hook for whatever your PD requires. This is another one of those kinks that the Christie Commission needs to iron out - LOL, like that's going to happen.

I doubt very much that you can use one set of prints for both the teaching and firearms applications. Too many snouts in the trough - everybody needs to get their cut.

Boy, am I cynical this morning.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Separate prints are required for firearms and a teaching/school position. I only know that because a relative just went through the school hiring process.

And if you choose to apply to have firearms in a school setting, toe prints and a seven foot long anal probe are required.

:resent:

I had to get finger printed again to get a job at a school but my finger prints for my FID are almost 10 years old and i have never been asked to get printed again. I got 3 pistol permits last year

different PDs have different rules.

Law says that they can require fingerprinting again but not that they have too.

The application is completely arbitrary.   Some PDs require new prints every time you apply for a permit.  Some only if you are doing a change of address.  Some require it after an arbitrary number of years.  I applied for a change of address 20+ years after my initial FID and NJSP did not require fingerprints.

Thank you for all your feedback. I live in Old Bridge, so I will call the records department and double check!

Old Bridge, NJ PD link

http://www.oldbridge.com/content/5146/5269/6019.aspx

From that site, it appears Old Bridge PD requires the applicant to go through the initial procedure all over again including finger prints.  Its bunch of BS.

The fingerprinting procedure/results is specific to requesting agency and purpose. So you cannot combine your teacher related check with the PD related check.

Call them anyways.

Subsequent Application for Similar Permits:

1. Within two (2) years of the initial application, applicant must submit to a Criminal History Name Check (SBI212A form).

2. Over two (2) years, applicant must follow Initial Application Procedures.

Applicants may apply Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
