Sighted in and toyed with the gun I just bought my gf.  She wanted to get into rifle shooting.  We picked up a Savage Axis II in .223/weaver 3-9x combo.  After sighting it in she we were both shooting 1"-1.25" groups (some flyers) with cheap pmc or federal 55gr ammo at 100yds.  For not having any real experience with long guns, she is pretty impressive.  She wants to move out to 200-300 yards and see how that goes.

I'm not much of a bolt gun shooter, any tips for us on how to stay consistent and reduce groups?

Nice gun.  Have you taken the NRA basic rifle course?  One of the things I remember were the breathing techniques and respiratory pause.  Additionally a smooth trigger pull (not jerking the finger) helps with aiming as well.

I should look into breathing techniques.

Nice! I was curious did you perhaps clean and oil the gun before shooting it? Its always a good idea to preform basic maintenance on a firearms before shooting it. Also bring out a couple of packs of different types of ammo to see what your gun groups best with. Have fun at the range!

I did just that when I got my Axis II XP and surprisingly, FM .223 REMAN 55gr was the most accurate by far of the cheaper boxes of .223 I tried out.

Wolf Gold was the worst...  followed by AE 55gr varmint tipped and PMC

Sweet rifle and I hope the GF enjoys it.  Now you gotta pay for all that extra ammo she starts shooting!  There are worse problems to deal with.   :)
