+1 For the good guys with CCW

Recommended Posts

Happened earlier today:

North Charleston police are investigating an early morning robbery at a Waffle House restaurant in which the suspected robber was shot by a customer.

“He saved us, that’s what he did,” a Waffle House employee said.

According to a news release, police were summoned to the Waffle House at 6907 Dorchester Road shortly after 5 a.m. for a report of a robbery and shots having been fired.

When officers arrived, they found the business had been robbed and the suspect had been shot, the news release said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a customer shot the suspect, whom investigators were working to identify.

He was in critical condition at Medical University Hospital, police spokeswoman Angela Johnson told The Post and Courier.

The customer who intervened had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Johnson said.

“It’s says something about firearms,” a uniformed officer said, “for good people with firearms being in the right hands.”

Waffle House division manager Brandon Rogers said the robbery was the first incident he could recall at the Dorchester Road location.

“No one was hurt, which is the best part,” Rogers said. “No one was injured - besides the suspect.”

Hopefully, he won't face any "discipline" from the natl. HQ at Waffle House.  We'll see.  And good on the LEOs for taking the right position on it.

It was a customer who shot, not an employee. And WH corporate wouldn't be involved with that store...it's a franchise, not a corporate store. I worked for them many, many moons ago...at that time, they had 8 stores around Charleston, probably a lot more now.

Don't the franchisees have to agree to "brand" their franchise to corporate standards to get the franchise? Otherwise, I'd wonder how a corporate owner could control the brand. Imagine a McDonald's with "pink" arches instead of "gold," simply because the franchisee likes the color pink and wants to be "different."

Point being, even if it were a customer who shot, if the corporate branding standards required franchised stores to be GFZs, the franchisee would be breaking the franchise agreement by servicing ccw customers.  Are Panera stores not franchised? I wonder how they get away with forcing all of them to be GFZs? :dontknow:

I'm not sure how to even start to explain this, because it would take years of experience to realize this is generally a non-issue and there is really no good reason to bother teasing out the details. There are almost zero companies that have a CCW ban as a franchise agreement. Perhaps not zero, but almost zero for certain.

Employees are a much different matter.

The report did not mention the Waffle House as being a "gun free zone" so there was no reason for the CCW customer not to be there at the time of the robbery!

The city demographic is majority black and if statistics mean anything, the robber was black. The very fact that we are not getting reports of mass rioting, looting with half of the city ablaze

signifies the following as a given.

1) The CCW was not an off duty LEO!

2) The police and witnesses have identified the CCW as being black!

3) The CCW was a hero in my book regardless of race!

4) The fact that the CCW was black is a big plus for the entire city!!! No news here! Nothing to protest!!!

5) The Robber should have chosen a location in New Jersey! He would now have a bag full of cash and would be alive to enjoy it!!!

I have made quite a few assumptions based solely on the demographics of the city and the reaction or lack of reaction of it's population!

The CCW that took out the perp has been praised by the local LE, the store manager and its customers! He deserves the praise and I hope

he takes a few more bad guys down before he hangs up his gun! Bravo to the good Samaritan for taking action, whoever you are!!!!

Actually, it doesn't take "years of experience...."   just a little Google Fu.

2A Check - Waffle House...

Bearing Arms - Customer Shoots an Armed Robber at SC Waffle House...

So, apparently, franchises are allowed to adjust the policy for "local conditions."  Not sure about this particular franchise,  but hopefully, it means there won't be any retribution.

I don't get it, it's CCW, I'm concealed so how would they know anyway?  If defensive action occurs I'll deal with it then rather being carried by pall bearers to my grave.  That's why I actually have CCW insurance.

I'm glad the right person got shot in this case instead of the innocent.  In NJ we'd be waiting for PD to show but of course that's after the crime and potential innocents being hurt.  I'm a big fan of LEO and I'm a big fan of the citizenry helping protect one another.

I'm not so sure I agree that this is a +1 for the ccw. The way I read it the guy was leaving the store. Was there really any threat to anyone inside or outside of the store?

It's a +1 in that it sends a message that people will fight crime. Kill and maim enough robbers and they will find new work (probably in politics).

It is a negative because the medical care that wounded perps need is paid for by you and me.

. Ccw holders aren't supposed to be crime fighters. This isn't batman in Gotham. I could care less about the dead dude. But whose life was in danger when the bad dude left with the shitty anti guns restaurants money?

Or you can read what I responded to. He was talking about franchises in general, not Waffle House.

Open carrying for 8 years, I've never been kicked out of anywhere. Those years of experience are more relevant to what he was asking than looking up a Waffle House policy on goo.

The next life in danger would be the next person and the next person ad infinitum that Mr Scumbag tried to rob. Happily, those next people are no longer at risk due to Mr. Scumbag having kicked the oxygen habit. This wasn't a shoplifter - this was an armed robber.

If we had more Batmen, we would have less Gothams.

The original post was about Waffle House, and that's all that concerned me.  I believe it's foolish to generalize about franchise agreements as they can change at the drop of a hat, and I would not put it past any company to require of their franchisees to follow certain "corporate brand" policies. As I stated, I seriously doubt that McDonald's would allow any franchisee to change the "Golden Arches" to "pink" or some other color.  If these sorts of incidents continue, I would expect that many franchise agreements will change.

So you say...
