son of sam 9 Posted November 4, 2015 I was given a very rough 1893 Spanish. I know they are week old actions so I decided to build it into a 7.62x39. I picked up a mag block from eBay and a 21" barrel from gun parts corp. Plan on trueing the action and lapping the lugs as I put it together. I glass beaded the action, draw filed and beaded again to improve upon the rough machining and generally poor appearance. Plan on finishing with duracoat type finish. This should be a great first centerfire rifle for my daughter (10y/o). I still need a cock on open kit and probably a wood stock. I think the old milsurp stock is in to poor of condition to reuse. From people who have done this conversion in the past is there anything I should be aware of with the conversion? Any down side? Anyone have stock in decent shape or any other parts they want to get rid of?
Worn_Holster 2 Posted November 4, 2015 Why waste the effort on such a low performance cartridge? I have a Chilean Mauser that was arsenal converted to 7.63x51which is a great shooter, with a Mojo peep sight

I have a Chilean Mauser that was arsenal converted to 7.63x51which is a great shooter, with a Mojo peep sight Spanish mausers are well known for failure with 308. 7.62x39 is a cheep learner with surplus ammo and very capable of accuracy with quality ammo. Also has plenty of power to take deer out to 150 yds or so. Offers very low recoil. Its not about low performance, more about enough performance.
