medved11 71 Posted November 19, 2015 Does anyone know of a good M1a gunsmith/armorer in NJ? I'm looking to re-barrel an M1a and I'm hoping to avoid having to ship it somewhere to do the work if there's a shop in NJ that can handle the job properly. medved11 71 Posted November 19, 2015 just send it to LRB on long Island... Thanks - I'll check them out as well. i was just hoping to find someone here in NJ so that I didn't have to deal with shipping the rifle. I'm not sure whether I could drop my rifle off in person at LRB or not

Ewing's not that far from me so not having to ship the rifle is a big plus.
Golf battery 1,223 Posted November 22, 2015 Yeah carls a good guy. Did some excellent triger work and a hooded rear sight on my m1a.

medved11 71 Posted December 1, 2015 Sooo. I take it your going to carl? Or not? Yep - I'm going to Carl. I'm just waiting on the Big Brown Truck to bring the last of my parts so that I can take everything over to him.
Golf battery 1,223 Posted December 1, 2015 Good choice.
medved11 71 Posted December 3, 2015 Good choice. I think so too based on some other recommendations that I've received for him as well. The Brown Truck showed up yesterday with my parts, so I'm all set to drop everything off and let Carl do his thing. I'll post some "before" pictures of my rifle later on, but I'll probably wait to post the "after" pictures until I can complete the finish job on the stock (I picked up a new unfinished walnut stock from Fulton Armory - I'm going to finish it using just pure Tung oil and some Gunny paste). medved11 71 Posted December 7, 2015 Here's a very boring "before" picture of my plain vanilla 22" Standard M1aI'll post more detailed "after" pictures after the work is completedSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
medved11 71 Posted December 16, 2015 I picked up my rifle from Carl this evening and it looks great (he did an awersome job on the barrel and front end) - I'll post some "after" pictures once I can get the gun into some good light
Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted December 16, 2015 Glad that it worked out for you. Carl is a good guy and a great friend. Adios, Pizza Bob
medved11 71 Posted December 16, 2015 Glad that it worked out for you. Carl is a good guy and a great friend. Adios, Pizza Bob I completely agree - Carl is a great guy and I'm glad that you recommended him to me. I learned a lot of practical information about the M1a in just a few short conversations with him. Carl's even got me considering setting up a small re-loading station in my garage after a short conversation about the overall process (it turns out that I was over-complicating the process in my head). Parker 213 Posted December 16, 2015 Looking forward to the "after" pics and the work done.
medved11 71 Posted December 17, 2015 I'll try to post some "after" pictures over the weekend while I'm at the range breaking in the new barrel a little. So far, I can say that it feels like a completely different gun with the shorter barrel and the hooded gas lock front sight (the thin front blade is very easy to pick up and focus on). I'm still in the process of finishing the walnut stock that will eventually replace the plastic SAI factory stock that on it now. I've got two coats of 50/50 tung oil and mineral spirits rubbed in so far. I'm letting the second coat soak in for another day, after that I'll start rubbing in 4 or 5 coats of 100% tung oil. medved11 71 Posted December 18, 2015 Here's a shot of the new front end of the rifle: It's got a Springfield muzzle brake and an SEI hooded gas lock front sight. All of this is sitting on the end of a new Criterion 18.5" barrel. I put 100 rounds through it today and it functioned perfectly. I still need to tweak the elevation a little bit but the windage is fine at 100 yards Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
medved11 71 Posted December 19, 2015 Thanks - the elevation on the hooded sight is a bit of a PITA to adjust but I really like the sight picture. It's probably a little less precise than the standard sight but this one's easier for my eyes to work with for whatever reason Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wojo 98 Posted December 19, 2015 Carl did my trigger on my M1A Scout. Turn around time was just a few days. Real gentleman.
