Remington 783 vs Savage Axis

I'm going to Dick's tomorrow to pick up my first bolt action rifle. I have it narrowed down to either the Savage Axis or the Remington 783 in .223. I don't really know much about scoped rifles. Until my eyes started getting a little older I always thought of scopes as cheating. I used to tell people that if you can't hit it with iron sights you shouldn't be shooting at it. These days I'll take all the help I can get. Any opinions on either rifle are appreciated.

I felt the Remington 783 - the action was very rough.  Didn't feel natural.  I picked up a Savage Axis last year in .308 - it's nice.  Trigger pull is heavy but I lightened that up with a new spring.

I have always been a fan of the Savage rifles. Dollar for dollar, I feel they have the best combination of quality, features, and accuracy out of all in its class.

I used to have a Savage 111 in 7mmRem Mag I sold off a few years ago, and I regret it. It was a very accurate rifle out of the box.

I'd like to have another, this time in .308.

Just bought the Savage in .308 tonight at Dicks in Mt Laurel. Last one they had, couldn't resist for $199.00.

I got the same gun last year - it's pretty nice but I wanted to lighten up the trigger a lot - changed the trigger spring.
