gfl216 226 Posted November 26, 2015 I'm going to Dick's tomorrow to pick up my first bolt action rifle. I have it narrowed down to either the Savage Axis or the Remington 783 in .223. I don't really know much about scoped rifles. Until my eyes started getting a little older I always thought of scopes as cheating. I used to tell people that if you can't hit it with iron sights you shouldn't be shooting at it. These days I'll take all the help I can get. Any opinions on either rifle are appreciated. Krdshrk 3,877 Posted November 26, 2015 I felt the Remington 783 - the action was very rough. Didn't feel natural. I picked up a Savage Axis last year in .308 - it's nice. Trigger pull is heavy but I lightened that up with a new spring.
Displaced Texan 11,731 Posted November 26, 2015 I have always been a fan of the Savage rifles. Dollar for dollar, I feel they have the best combination of quality, features, and accuracy out of all in its class. I used to have a Savage 111 in 7mmRem Mag I sold off a few years ago, and I regret it. It was a very accurate rifle out of the box. I'd like to have another, this time in .308. ted527 21 Posted November 27, 2015 Just bought the Savage in .308 tonight at Dicks in Mt Laurel. Last one they had, couldn't resist for $199.00.

Krdshrk 3,877 Posted November 27, 2015 I got the same gun last year - it's pretty nice but I wanted to lighten up the trigger a lot - changed the trigger spring.
