Question on scopes

Can anyone tell me what the (any number) X (another number) means? I know it has to do with the magnification and I believe the diamiter of what can be seen through the scope.

Let's take a standard 3-9x40.  3-9 is the magnification, and 40 is the objective lens size (in mm)...

 

The higher the number on the left, the higher the magnification.  The higher the number on the right, the larger the lens.

Minimum magnification - max magnification. So in the above its a variable magnification scope that can go between 3 and 9 times magnification.

If the spec only has 2 numbers as in 2 x 20 then the first is the fixed magnification while the second is the objective lens size. The bigger the objective lens generally the brighter the image.

Ok, let me see if I have this right. The 1st number is the magnification, if there is 2 numbers the magnification is adjustible. The second number is the dimiater of the front lense and the bigger the lense the brighter the immage.

First number is minimum magnification, "- plus second number " is maximum magnification, and number after "x" is objective lens size.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I appreicate you help. Now can any one recomend a halfway decent, inexpensive (and I do mean inexpensive like under $100) reddot with maybe 1x3 magnification (fixed is fine).

Red dots aren't variable power - you can get a magnifier if you want zoom.

 

Some Vortex red dots come with a "doubler" that you screw on for magnification...

Primary arms stuff is my go to under 100 for rds. Under 250 is vortex. Over that you might as well by a PRO
