Njbanshee 9 Posted January 4, 2016 My buddy and I tried hunting some coyotes over the weekend. It's not as easy as we thought. If anyone hunts them and wouldn't mind showing me the ropes that would be awesome.
Parker 213 Posted January 5, 2016 They are VERY difficult to hunt. I'm still learning too.
DeerSlayer 241 Posted January 7, 2016 They're super fast, and skiddish. Their sense of smell is very good too. So wind and sent control are both factors. Kill em all!
FishNHard 145 Posted January 7, 2016 Are you hunting them during the day or at night ?????
Njbanshee 9 Posted January 9, 2016 We hunted at night.

Parker 213 Posted February 3, 2016 You can't rifle hunt at night But you can in New York. (Orange County's Sterling Forest is a stone's skip away from New Jersey.)

DeerSlayer 241 Posted February 3, 2016 Well, thanks capt. Obvious, lol.I know shitty answer. But that's what the council and the DEP decided. They're very hesitant to allow any rifle hunting, it's a miracle we got them to allow day hunting under .25cal. Centerfire
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted February 3, 2016 But you can in New York. (Orange County's Sterling Forest is a stone's skip away from New Jersey.) That's true, I'm actually pretty close, about 15mins. Only issue is I have a friend who is asking me to help out on his property up by highpoint. It's pretty hard to hide from coyotes during the day. Let's remember that only a few decades ago slugs were banned and only buckshot was allowed for big game. And then when rifles were allowed, on private land, for woodchuck, the grain weight was 100 grains, SP or HP, and any caliber was legal provided you kept the bullet weight below the recommended maximum. Now that coyote and fox have been added to the mix, along with daytime hunting for rifle, on most all parcels of land, the bullet weight has dropped again to 80 grs. (Last I checked.) It sucks that we have to take what we can get, but it is better then nothing. With the dwindling number of hunters in the state, I think they are starting to relax restrictions.. We didn't get enough bears and they opened shotgun.
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted February 3, 2016 ^ if you have your trapping licenses snare them. I told my buddy to get his trapping license, that was the first thing I told him. But then he asked me if I wanted to hunt. He has a foal, and another on the way and he's worried. What's nice is the property butts up against a state park. We didn't get enough bears and they opened shotgun.Shotgun/muzzeloader for bear has been open since 03, except one year. This October we will have an early week 6 day archery, the last 3 days will be archery/Muzzeloader. And they will have the regular December 6 day shotgun/muzzeloader firearm season as well. We in the Federation of Sportsmen’s clubs pushed hard for this. We also get to nominate 3 of our members to be appointed by the governor to the fish and game council. So that's kinda nice too. Without the federation hunting would have been banned by now in NJ. The anti groups pander to the liberals, we have to fight them every year.
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted February 3, 2016 Ill have to check them out, I'm a member of DU. I like to help out where ever I can. Did they open up Archery this year? I thought they changed something to the weapon options this year.
DeerSlayer 241 Posted February 4, 2016 Ill have to check them out, I'm a member of DU. I like to help out where ever I can. Did they open up Archery this year? I thought they changed something to the weapon options this year. The resolution passed, so it's up to the game council to initiate the early archery season as they see fit to. Always depends on the biology reports on the population, which they start to tally late February early March. We'll probably know for sure by late August. We now have a permanent bear season written into the game code, that no governor can stop for the bleeding hearts. So bear hunting in NJ is here to stay, just like deer season is. Every county except Hudson has a county chapter of the Federation. Their monthly meeting times and locations are listed on the state website. They're always welcoming to new attendees.
