First Handgun/12GA/Rifle

Oh, ok. I'll look into doing that, that's not a terrible idea. I'd rather spend 100$ on rentals and make sure i like what i am buying than buy blind because it feels right in my hand or looks cool, haha.

I Was looking at that range in Bridgewater and unfortunately they are no longer accepting new members, which sucks because it seems nice.

They will open the membership occasionally.  They did it last year for a bit.

Don't be too quick to rule out other calibers, My wife hates my Sccy CPX-2, it's a <1 lb compact and it has a bit of kick. OTOH, she loves our 1911s, all .45ACP, because they are much easier to handle. I don't mind the Sccy so much, but I've gotta admit my hand is pretty sore after 150-200 rounds.

I have no idea what experience you have, but have you considered some training? Some of the safety classes that are available include range time and have an assortment of rentals available. I got my wife into shooting by signing us up for a NRA First Steps Pistol class. The safety training made her feel more comfortable and they brought out 7 different pistols for the range portion (S&W 22A, M&P9 and 686+, Ruger SR22 and LCR, Glock 19 and Kimber Custom 2). Ammo was included so it was a relatively cheap way to try out some guns.

DOH!! I must have missed it. I've been checking every once in a while for the last couple years. Is there a list to get on to be notified?

It wasn't an open recruitment - it was at first to family of members, then to friends/coworkers/etc.

Brew guy; i am most definitely open to taking a course; in fact, i think i mentioned somewhere on here that i intended on taking some sort of class. I'll be the first to admit that i really don't know much and i can only learn so much from my friend. Unfortunately right now i'm ridiculously busy and wont have much time for a while (Working 70+hrs/week) but hopefully in a few months i will. By then, i will have had to pick a gun or let my permit expire.

Lambo - let me know if you're available Saturday afternoon.  I should be available.  Been wanting/needing to get out to shoot anyway.

KRD, i may or may not have work. I'll private message you with my phone number in a second.

Found time between meetings to stop at the Heritage Guild in Rahway (which as it turn out is only 2-3 miles from my house) with my buddy.. They wouldn't let me hold anything without an FID but they had the various fake gun's to hold to see the different grip sizes, and i really liked the feel of the 'mock' Glock 19. Felt nice and solid, may be my first purchase. My friend ended up leaving with a Sig AR. Took 3 HOURS for the freakin' check, they seemed to be quite busy today. They got back with the approval right as they were closing, lucky for him. I LOVE the 1911's, the mock 1911 was probably my favorite feel but it seems like any 1911 started at 1100 or so and that is simply NOT in my budget right now with the other stuff i want. That's probably my next purchase in a few months. Didn't get to hold or shoot anything, but nonetheless a fairly productive day as i at least know what guns i do want to look at and feel when i get my FID. Called the local PD on Friday and they were just waiting for the people upstairs to review/sign off, so i'm quite antsy. I Hate this feeling!

You can't go wrong getting a Glock 19. It's the best all around 9mm there is IMO. You can get good 9mm ammo now for $12 a box or less. The 9mm Parabellum is a more than adequate SD round. There's one FFL on this forum who's advertising Gen 3 19s for $500 so that fits your budget.

Out of curiosity, what is the difference between Gen3's and Gen4's other than the slightly changed frame? I Got a number for a guy who is apparently dirt cheap. My friend got his SP2022 for 100$ less than anyone else was asking, so i figured i'd call him and order everything through that guy. I emailed him a little while ago just to get an idea of what he would be looking at so that i can compare his prices to the rest.
I decided to stretch my budget a bit if it means getting something i want; I'm not going to buy a POS because i don't want to spend 50-100$ more. So my budget for the AR Jumped to around 1500$ O.T.D. and 600$ for the handgun, also out the door. We'll see what happens haha. Looking at the Sig M400 Enhanced and going to add rails to that for a flashlight rather than get one with a rail system, plus i can always just put a rail system on it.

I'm going to say again that for the AR look for a deal on a complete upper and on a complete lower and ask some forum members to help you assemble it. It will save you some money that you can put toward optics. I know that you don't know the exact specs you want right now, but maybe get a standard set up and when you get to know your preferences better you can sell that upper and buy or build a different one.

Got my FID&PP Today. Spent a few hrs at The Heritage guild talking to some great guy's. Ended up getting the Sig M400 AR i mentioned in a separate thread; unfortunately they didn't have the enhanced  version but it turns out the standard M400 has the  Magpul stock anyways due to NJ law, so the only real difference is the front handguard which is no big deal. I'll pick up an MOE separately or a quad rail. Also picked up a little MP Sport 15-22 for the wife to plink around with and for when i want to put a lot of rounds down range without breaking the freakin' bank. And spent quite a bit more than i wanted and got a Ruger 1911. Seems like the reviews are mixed on them and from what i've heard their groupings aren't exactly the greatest, but its a range gun so i'll live. Biggest downside is its not 9mm, wasn't a fan of the 9mm 1911s they had, plus i refused to buy a 9mm 1911. So its a .45 which from what i read online isn't terrible due to the heavier bullet rather than higher velocity, or something along those lines. I now have a month  or two until i get another Pistol permit and the 31 day's pass to look into some other handguns in 9mm. I Held the ones i thought i would like and they just didn't seem right. Even the glock 19 which i liked when it was the fake demo one just didn't feel right, and they were sold out of them. Held a few others including the M9 (i believe) and i simply was not a fan. Spent a bit more than i'd like but i got a gun that i've wanted for year's. Was hoping to get a 9mm first and then the 1911 but it can wait, haha.
Thanks for all the help! Now to find a nice rail/handguard for the 400 and locate a place with some darn AR mag's in stock.

Congrats on the FID!

I'll probably be hitting up SCFGPA Saturday with a couple coworkers if you want to tag along.

Magpul MOE handguards are VERY easy to obtain.  Just make sure you get the right length ones.  I believe the M400 has a carbine length gas system, so get a carbine length handguard.

Mags are easy to get too - Forum vendors like Monmouth Arms will have MidwestPX (also another forum vendor) blocked Magpul PMags in stock.  Joe Bob Outfitters will have them too.

Some vendors here will have the 15 round Hexmags as well.

Thanks! I drove the permits lady NUTS haha. Called her and she said she was working on my permit as we speak, stopped in a few hours later and made her reprint my pistol permit with Today's date rather than tomorrows so that i could go to the store.
I Know Heritage has Hexmags on order but they are 100% sold out in both NJ locations, at least on the full size mags, which sucks because the one is right down the street from me only 2 or 3 miles. I figured i'd just order them online. I know the rahway one was 100% out and the one i was at is a bit further and they were out of everything but the miniature 10 or 15 round ones, which i'm simply not a fan of. I'd rather wait and get the full size blocked mags.
I believe you are right, its something like 7" for the handguard. I'd like the ability to add rail mounted accessories including the flashlight/laser combo i already have from work (5 finger discount on my own merchandise, haha) so i don't know if it'd be worth getting the magpul moe with the accessory rail's on the two sides or maybe i'll just get a quad rail. I'll have to do some research and see what i can find.

High Exposure, i'm not sure i understood.
The light that i have has a pic or 1" Scope mount, i believe. The New MLOK handguards do not have any rails, but they make the little rail sections for 20$ or so that bolt onto the handguard and then you can attach whatever. I realize that magpul makes direct attachment equipment like vertical grips, etc. but that wouldn't help as far as the flashlight thing goes. I Think maybe you misunderstood???

I don't know what light you have, but if it has a 1" body you have plenty of options. Magpul, Arisaka, IWC, and a few other companies, make MLOK light mounts with 1" rings. You just need to plan and buy accordingly.

Magoul MLOK light mounts:

https://www.magpul.com/search-results?PID=88&eComQuery=M+Lok+light&ProductNumber=M+Lok+light

Arisaka MLOK light mounts:

http://arisakadefense.com/collections/light-mounts

Eliminating the rail section make the light a little more streamlined, reduces snag hazards and tolerance stacking, and drops some weight.

If you are mounting a laser to the handguard, the Magpul MOE handguards may not be the way to go. They don't mount solid enough to retain zero.

PD2K, a bit delayed hahaha. I Held the 19/something similar and it didn't feel right in my hands, though. At least, not after holding the 1911. I held one of those fake glocks they have so you can feel the difference in grip sizes and that was advertizing the streamlight weapon lights and absolutely loved it. I was basically set on a g19 until i held the real thing and the feeling was weird. Always ran 1911's even when i used to airsoft and always wanted one so i figured why not. Already had a blackhawk holster and all for it, too.

As for the light that i have, its a Red dot/flashlight combo, i don't THINK i could just take it apart and mount it right to the handguard with a different bracket, though i could be wrong. I'm going to open it once im done shipping out some order's i have to get out the door and see what it comes with. I think its a custom mount though for the laser and flashlight that goes to a pic rail. As far as it being solid, would the Magpul handguard be solid? I Don't want a wobbly handguard.

Like I said, I am not sure what light you have - MLOK direct connect may work, then again it may not. If not, attach a rail section.

Out of curiosity, what light is it?

The mil-spec and Magpul MOE handguards have some play. They are only held in place by spring pressure from the delta ring. The MOE models are fine for attaching a light and vert grip/handstop. They are more than capable of securing the equipment that 90% of the AR shooters out there require. I have them on 2 of my rifles.

If you are planning to run a piece of gear on your handguards that needs to be zeroed, you need something a little more solid.

 i refused to buy a 9mm 1911.

I'm curious as to why ?

Almost everyone I know has 1 in their collection , less expensive to shoot , slightly higher capacity and just fun plain fun.

Pick one up and it's a 1911 . pull the trigger it's like  " Wait, what  ? "

Hey. First post ever here, lol.

I really learned a lot from this discussion. Thanks.

I'm looking for my first gun purchase. I'm pretty sure I want a Tavor. Does anyone have any comments/experience with it?

Be prepared to spend a lot of money.
