Nickel/Coated Bolt Carrier suggestions

Recommended Posts

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a Sharps Bolt Carrier, at $199 it's kinda pricey but in the general range of other chrome/nickel/coated carriers.

Just looking to see what others have used in their builds and see what you had for suggestions.  I want a chrome/coated carrier to go with my stainless barrel.

Thanks

I have a FailZero NiB bolt. It is a fine bolt but I'm not impressed with NiB for cleanup ease. They may reduce friction but I never noticed a difference. If you want to buy it for looks, go right ahead but I don't think there a performance advantage.

On bolt carriers I've been more impressed with PVD (like Adams/Voodoo uses) and QPQ type (melonite/etc)  type finishes it. Probably all 3 types (and I guess we now have the titanium coatings) are better then the milspec finish, but I suspect the parts under the finish will fail first anyway, Last I broke a bolt it still had most of its parkarized finish.

If you want it for looks, then go stainless, because it will look more stainless over time. The NiB bolt I have definitely gets a certain patina over time that is not bright at all.

Personally, i prefer a "coated" bcg over a "plated" bcg.

A coated bcg i.e. NP3, melonite, et al, is a finer coating that comes off in much smaller, dust-like pieces, as it wears.

A plated bcg i.e. chrome, NiB, etc, is made with layers of metal that can peel off in larger pieces or even strips.

As far as protection and lubricity, it all seems similar to me (although NP3 supposedly has the best lubricity). For the most part, i run my bolts wet and dont go 1000's of rounds before re-oiling it.

Thanks for the tips - I'm really not all that embarrassed to say, I'm into the sharps bolt for the looks alone, I have reservations about their performance claims, I'm sure it's not much better than any other bolt - especially with how rarely I get a chance to shoot.

I got the WMD NiB BCG from Ty, MidwestPX and it runs great. Haven't cleaned it yet so I can't comment on how easily it cleans up. I do however have over 1300 rounds through it with not one hiccup. I might clean it soon...

Looks like his website is down.  Oh well, I placed an order for the Sharps, we'll see how it works out.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
