Hey all. Just curious. A buddy of mine wanted to teach me how to properly assemble, disassemble, install new handguard etc. on my new M400. Just got my FID and other than shooting rentals in which i didn't even have to load the magazines, i am fairly unfamiliar with them; i know the basics (How to open them, etc) only because they break down for the most part the same way as an airsoft gun. That being said, Is it Legal & OK for me to take my firearms to my friends house, parent's house, etc. or only to/from FFL's & Ranges??

Long arms can be brought basically anywhere as long as they are legally stowed. Handguns are to and from the range/shop only. Drive smart and don't get pulled over if you are worried about explaining why you have a gun

What are the actual regulations regarding 'legally stowed'? NJ Laws are ridiculously broad, some guy's say wrapping a firearm in a rag would be considered legal to transport as long as they are not in the open.
Would a gun bag with a lock on the zippers be considered legal if i stored them that way next to me if i stayed at my moms? The reason i'm asking is i'm in the Woodbridge area and am over an hour from any decent gun range. My parent's are in the East Brunswick area and that would be 30 or so minutes closer. I have my own room there for when we stay the night there and would keep the firearms in the closet of that room overnight so that i could go to the range the next morning. Would that be considered alright? Thanks!

So, technically, as long as i am present along with my FID i can legally have my RIFLES with me, even if it is not a range/shop or my own home and i am not on the way to any of those places? I Just want to be 100% Sure; better safe than sorry. I'm assuming this also does not apply to Handguns?

You can have a rifle on you as long as it is unloaded and the ammo is separate from it. Technically it should be locked. Pretty much everyone says a locked trunk is the same as a locked case. Gun shops have sold me a rifle in a plastic bag as a case to send me home. The law is open to interpretation, do you want to be a test subject to the law? No. Handguns are a different story. You by law should only transfer them between ranges and shops. Same goes for hollow point bullets. Likes I said before, keep your stuff locked up in a reasonable manner and don't be reckless when you are driving with firearms

Unfortunately, the wife drives a Kia Soul, so no trunk. I drive an F150 and would rather not put them in the bed, even though it has a camper on it, but i don't really drive it often other than for work anyways. I Have bag's and a Hard case for my AR on the way, so locking them up in a bag is no problem. I have a locking pelican case for the handgun as well; its not so much transporting them thats the problem, its whether its legal for me to bring them to somebodies house and keep them there, sometimes overnight (and under my supervision, locked away in a closet and with locks on the actual firearms). For example, i may be going to the range sunday early AM. The range is over an hour away, so i'd like to stay at my mothers house which is half way there where my buddy who is taking me lives (old highschool friend who still lives in town) and take one car from his place to the range, rather than taking two cars all the way to the range. Or, for example, if i want to visit my parents before/after the range since i'll already be in the area. I understand that it is illegal with handguns (or is it just a grey area?), but is it legal with rifles/long guns? I've heard of guy's staying at friends houses the night before going out to hunt and bringing their firearms with them; is that legal?? I'm not stupid enough to do anything that would get me caught in a grey area, but i don't want to blatantly break the law. I know not to speed and get in an accident with an arsenal in the car, even if i'm not doing anything illegal as far as the transportation of the firearms goes, just to avoid the hassle, but am not sure what the rules/regulations are as far as having the firearms in places other than your home, business, and a range/gun shop.

Don't take this as anti-leo because anyone that knows me, knows better. But when we are paying for range time by the hour, tuff. I load them home and at my leisure. They get transported legally as well as a pistol. Don't let LE tell ya bullshit. Especially the NJSP...

In NJ that = it's not illegal but if found out you will probably be arrested and have to pay tons of money to go to court and lawyer up and deal with that.

LOL, just wanna-be lawyers giving their free advice.   And they get it from Nappen because he says it can be construed that a mag is part of a gun, so if a part of the gun is loaded the entire gun is loaded.  I have gone on record as disagreeing with this INTERPRETATION of UNWRITTEN law since I'm not a lawyer paid to get people off the hook and therefore have to give interpretation(s) based upon being as safely compliant of NJ law and its' misinterpreted MYTHS.  I'd like to see some case law where someone was hung-out-to-dry for a loaded mag or a BB pistol w/ 100 BB's still in it waiting for the C02 cartridge.

 

I guess having loaded mags means you have INTENT to shoot the gun.  To use the tool for what it was designed for.  Maybe having car keys in your pocket is now to be construed as you'll likely drive drunk even though your car is home and a designated driver is doing the driving.  When will this BS of Goody-Two-Shoes "Feel-Good" ever stop haunting us all, eh?

 

So if a mag is part of a gun, and a loaded mag equals a LOADED GUN, how can I drive around with a loaded muzzleloader that's ready in all respects 'cept for the cap (gun's primer) being applied to the nipple of a percussion rifle?  Yeah, yeah, I know in Hunting Season we defer to Hunting laws and they allow it.  (Scratches head, scratches crotch, yawns, and does what he's been doin' for over 45 YEARS!)
