Considering a new "different" ccw

Recommended Posts

I currently carry a 9mm Shield. I like it, it suits my needs and I don't need a new gun.

Someone I know carries a Colt Pocket Hammerless 380 (you know who you are). I think it's cool and classy as hell to carry such an offbeat handgun.

I'm looking for something noticeably smaller than my Shield, and out of the ordinary. No mini plastic guns. Something fun to shoot and good to carry. Preferably cheap and has to have an advantage to my S&W.

I considered a Mustang Pocketlite. Somewhat common but too expensive. The Sig clone is off the list because I have a personal grudge against Sig.

A Tokarev made it high on my list but it's too big and supposedly unsafe. Maks seem chunky but I'll try my dad's. No wheelies.

Not an expert here but I own a Tokarev and two pistols in 9x18 -- an E. German Mak and a CZ82.

The Tok is too big for concealed carry IMO, not that I ever have. The round is very fast and probably goes through the average 380-lb perp with no trouble, so liability issues. Never heard that they were unreliable. There must be some defensive rounds out there but probably too expensive to train with. Plus it is single-action only which to me is a deal-breaker.

I've never had a malfunction of any kind, nothing, from either Makarov handgun. Never. And I'm not exactly Mr. Clean. Every time I shoot 'em I can't believe I've just gone through three or four more boxes and no problems. The CZ is a little rough on recoil for me but the E German is perfect. However only 8 rounds in the mag which will disturb serious caliber fags.

They're heavy but NOT big and not clunky. They feel substantial, which I like. They're super accurate and are easy on the pocketbook both through acquisition and usage; the ammo is about 20 cents/round.

PPKs are cool but are pricey. I considered a Bersa which at a glance is substantially similar but didn't offer any advantages.

AMTs look great but have iffy reliability.

Boberg is very interesting, but far out of my range.

Thanks for the input guys. Let's keep this going.

In all honesty, the more I think about it, I doubt anything will come close to beating your Shield in any category related to CCW other than "different". It is light weight, shootable, comfortable in the hand, accurate, reliable, affordable, has good sights, has respectable capacity, and is chambered in an effective caliber with known good terminal effects. I doubt you will find somethng else that solidly hits all those marks and is as different as you want it to be.

A CCW gun is not the piece you want to get creative with. Save that for the BBQ guns and the range queens.

How about a Kahr PM9? Mine has been great. Similar in size to the Shield/G43 and ticks all the boxes, you can get it in a satin finish and it's not too common.

All that being said - For something really different, I always thought the COP .357 4 shot Derringer-type was cool and classy:

Personally, I wouldn't carry it as a CCW piece (maybe a backup....) but you might like it.

I also like the Colt Mustangs, but that's a lot of gun for an abysmally performing .380 ACP. I would like to own one, but I would not carry it.

Another cool option would be an HK P7.

Get a 5 shot 340 PD. It's an airweight .357 and I really like mine. I put boot grips on it and a clip. Carries with no holster. Mine is the version that cam with the trijicon front site. I use federal .38 critical defense ammo and carry a speed strip when I have it.

I also have an XDS 45 ACP and bought a shield 9mm, like you want to replace, with green laser. It's super functional but to each his own.

Do they fire all at once, cause that is pretty muscle. Stupid, yet muscle.
